- 1871: the UK Census reported that John and Eliza were farming 195 acres on Borders Farm near Etchingham Kent with the assistance of "5 men and 1 boy." In addition, there was 1 "general servant" in the house, plus 1 "nurse." … Although John and his father James operated large farms in Kent England in the 1800s, there is no evidence that they owned the land they farmed; indeed, an apparently comprehensive listing of 1873 Kent landowners does not include these Boormans.

- 1881: this John James Boorman and family had moved to Sutton, Kent and he was listed as "Coal Merchant."

- 1883 (from a private researcher):
“In 1883, John and Eliza Boorman, ages about 50, and seven children moved to the United States. We don’t know specifically why they left England, and no record of their transport by ship to the United States has been found.” ...
“When the Boormans, John and Eliza and family, came to the United States in about 1883 from England, they first lived with Bill’s grandfather, Robert N. Fullagar, and his family on the Fullagar farm in Greene County, New York, just west of Leeds. [This farm, known as “The Old Homestead,” had a (boarding) house that could accommodate up to 40 guests.] Robert N. Fullagar was the son of Rachel Boorman (1802-1889) and William Fullagar (1793-1866).” …
“We also do not know how long they lived with Robert N. Fullagar and family near Leeds NY. (If they did arrive in 1883, it would have been a busy and undoubtedly difficult time for Robert N. Fullagar: His first wife, Charlotte Cundall, died 1 February 1883, and he married his second wife, Cora A. Wolfe, 29 July 1883.) …The Boormans were living in Gloversville/Broadalbin NY by the early 1890s. “

“Family lore suggests that the elder Boorman male of the 1883 arrivals, John James Boorman (b. 1831 – d. 1918), is related to our Rachel Boorman. “
“Based on letters from Arthur Elting Mead (AEM) to William Alfred Fullagar (WAF) in 1952, Rachel Boorman Fullagar may have had a brother in New York: AEM wrote WAF, “I never knew Rachel (Boorman) Fullagar had a brother in America until your letter reached me.” (WAF must have informed AEM that Rachel had a brother in this country – unfortunately, a copy of WAF’s letter is not available.) In a later letter, AEM suggested that this relative may have been in Broadalbin. If so, this would have provided a reason for our Boormans to go from England to Greene County, NY, to stay with the Fullagars, then on to Broadalbin. AEM also suggested that the “mystery” Boorman relative might have been a nephew of Rachel Boorman Fullagar.”

- 1900: John’s occupation listed as "leather dresser" (or tanner) in 1900 US census and in city directories
