RESEARCH NOTES
- from another researcher:
A Sophia Boorman (1788-1875), married to William Carpenter, arrived on the Quebec from England on 18 May 1840 with William and their 11 children, and also went to Sherman NY.  A Find-a-Grave posting of William Carpenter’s will lists the above Benjamin Boorman as William’s brother-in-law – and thus Sophia Boorman Carpenter is Benjamin’s brother.  They could be siblings of Rachel, but the discrepancy about Benjamin Boorman’s parents makes this questionable.
They had the following children:
465i.
James CARPENTER (1811-1837)
466ii.

RESEARCH NOTES
From another researcher:
- “A Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) arrived in New York State apparently between 1822-1824 with his wife, Sarah Hosmer Boorman, and 4 children. They went to western New York, in or near the towns of Sherman and Mina. Uncertainty about his relationship exists because there are two possibilities for his parents: James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845) and Mary Wood (1764-1844), and William Boorman and Mary Copping Boorman. A transcript of Sherman Cemetery (NY) grave markers states that the parents of Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) were William Boorman (ca 1766 – ca 1836) and Mary Copping Boorman. But, I’m thinking (hoping?) that the transcribed information was incorrect, and that his actual parents were James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845) and Mary Wood (1764-1844). “
- Cannot find baptism of any children at Headcorn or Smarden for either family [Joseph Hosmer or Sarah Hosmer Boormaman] so probably not CofE.
- a Boorman Family chart from Ditching England shows his father James (1761-1845), s/o Thomas and Ellizabeth (Babcock), married to Mary Wood (1764-1844) and lists 2 children: Esther m George Cotton to America (no dates), and Benjamin (1792-7) - note I do not yet have an Esther in this family. Not sure how to interpret the dates associated with Benjamin: born in 1792 and died in 1797? or perhaps uncertain of birth year sometime between 1792 and 1797?

The person listed before her: Sophia Carpenter 56 [1788] , farmer, Great Britain, UStates
[a Sophia Boorman b 1788 married a William Carpenter; Sophia was Benjamin’s sister, so I think this is a match, but why were they traveling without their husbands?]

- 1855 NY census, Sarah has a sister Martha Hosmer living with them in Sherman NY, age 26, born England, an alien residing in the county for only 6 months, yet a land owner. [I am concerned that Martha’s age is 33 years laters than her reported sister Sarah - so was she really her sister or was there a mistake in recording the ages, or both? At 26 Martha is younger than Sarah’s son Benjamin.]

The Death of Mrs BOORMAN widow of Benjamin occurred in this place Thursday, March 13, 1890 aged 93 years 11 months and 13 days. Her husband died Jan 8, 1886 aged 93-6-4,

- From a 1956 talk by Lee Ottaway in which he mentions Colgates and Boormans:
Ottaway, Lee L., (talk on) The Story of Mina (near Sherman NY), Chautauqua County Historical Society, Meeting at Findley Lake, October 6, 1956.

p. 17-18: “William Colgate, the first of the great soap manufacturers started to make soap on a considerable scale in 1806 at a plant established on the New Jersey side of the Hudson (eastern NY). Most of the potash used in the soap business at first came from Germany, but later there was a sturdy demand for the local product as presented by black salts. Except for Colgate and other Atlantic Seaboard buyers, the best market for black salts was to the soapmakers at Montreal. Mrs. William Colgate was a Boorman and one of the associates in the company was John Boorman, a relative of Benjamin Boorman of this locality. There is a family tradition that when Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) came to this country in 1825, he first worked for a few months for Colgate Soap Company. Whether this family connection of the Boormans had anything to do with the purchase of black salts in the town of Mina is entirely a matter for conjecture.”

From other researcherss:
- Said to be the daughter of James Hosmer and Ann Ottaway; sister of Mary Hosmer [not proven - can’t find Sarah’s baptism, but this James and Ann are likely the parents of Elizabeth bapt 1793] As Benjamin and Sarah’s daughter Sarah married a John Edwin Ottaway, this could either be a mixup between generations, or a justification of a connection between the 2 families even while still in England ????
- A Joseph Hosmer and Edward Shirley (B-I-L) where witnesses at Sarah’s wedding, so Joseph could be her father or possibly her brother. [probable father]
- Perhaps Sarah Homer’s parents were Joseph and Ann Hosmer of Headcorn, buried in the baptist cemetery in Smarden, with children listed including a Sarah and a John
- Increasingly, I believe Sarah Hosmer's parents were Joseph and Ann Hosmer, buried near Smarden.  I did find Joseph's will, but aside from listing names of his wife and children (perfect match for those listed on memorial), I saw no other useful information.
- I think [John Hosmer] may be related to the Sarah Hosmer who went form Kent to western NY (Mina or Sherman). Based on proximity, [John’s parents] might be Joseph Hosmer (1772-1837) and Ann __? (1776-1853) of Headcorn (see Memorials of Smarden, Kent, by Francis Haslewood, 1886, p. 204**. ...  But, is their John the John Hosmer who went to Newburgh?  (I think so.)  Is Sarah the Sarah Hosmer (1796-1890) who married Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886), and went to Sherman in western NY? [probably]
They had the following children:

Edwin BOORMAN (1816-1893)

294. Esther BOORMAN (James8, Thomas7, William6, Elizabeth HAYWARD5, Margaret BOORMAN4, William3, John2, John1). Born abt 1795 in England.

- 1831/35: in the will of Benjamin Boorman (husband of Jemima nee Parks):
“[To] Edward Shirley and William Shirley 2 sons of [his niece] Esther Boorman now Shirley daughter of James Boorman” - each received £80

RESEARCH NOTES
- a Boorman Family chart from Ditching England says her father James (1761-1845), s/o Thomas and Elizabeth (Babcock), married to Mary Wood (1764-1844) had 2 children: Esther m George Cotton to America (no dates), and Benjamin (1792-7).

- From another researcher:
“We know that Edward and Esther Boorman Shirley, plus their three children, traveled to the United States form England, but we don’t know what happened to them after that. They arrived in New York City on the ship Maria, 22 May 1822, after a voyage of more than five weeks. Ester’s sister, Rachel Boorman Fullagar (1802-1889), and Rachel’s husband William Fullagar (1793-1866) were on the Maria with them.
I’ve found no trace of any of this family (Esther, Edward, 3 children) after their arrival in New York City in 1822. Did they all die soon after this date? Might they have returned to England? (There is an Edward Shirley in the “right“ part of Kent later in the 1800s, but I’ve found no indication that it is the same Edward Shirley.) Esther’s brother, Benjamin, and sister, Sophia, went to western New York State, but I’ve not found the Edward Shirleys there. Another sister, Lydia, went to Australia with her husband, Samuel Cotton. Could the Edward Shirleys have gone to Australia?”
On 6 Apr 1815 when Esther was 20, she first married Edward SHIRLEY in East Sutton, Kent, England. Born abt 1791 in England.

RESEARCH NOTES
- Was his name John James Boorman or just James Boorman [originally recorded as John]? Or were there 2 different sons, John and James? Another researcher says there were 2 sons James and John based on their father’s will.

- Locations: East Sutton * [where this James was born] is a parish approximately 6 miles south-east of Maidstone in Kent, England and close to Ulcombe. It is also N of Headcorn and Biddenden, NE of Staplehurst, and NNE of Frittenden **, all in relatively close proximity.
Beneden *** is a little further S of Staplehurst and SE of Cranbrook Kent

- from another researcher: I think this “senior” James Boorman (~1761 - ~1844) and Mary Wood were parents of a “junior” James Boorman (~1799 - aft 1881) who apparently lived in England his entire life, married Anne ____ (~1805 - bef 1851), and was the father of John James Boorman (1831 - 1918) who ultimately lived in Gloversville / Broadalbin NY USA. John James Boorman (1831 - 1918) married Eliza Judge Boorman (1835-1901) and was head of the 1883 Boorman immigrant family who came to the USA in about 1883 and all went to Gloversville / Broadalbin NY after living with the Fullagars near Leeds NY. They were parents of 7 children:
> Jane (Jennie) JUdge boorman (1864 - 1948)
> John J Boorman (1865 - 1944)
> William H Boorman (1869 - 1947)
> Elizabeth A Boorman (~ 1870 - 1945)
> Rachel Boorman (1871 - 1936)
> Alice Maud Boorman (1872 - 1906)
> Ada M. Boorman (1877 - 1961)

There was also a James Boorman b. abt 1799 who married a Sarah and immigrated to USA in 1839:

Rachel died in Greene County, New York, USA, on 24 Dec 1889; she was 87. Buried abt 1889 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA.

* The name of William Fullagar’s wife is listed as Sarah (the image available online truncates the first part of the name, and on one transcript it’s listed as “wah” but on another it’s “Sarah.”  Perhaps the original passenger list was in error, but I’ve wondered if her name might be Rachel Sarah or Sarah Rachel?
Also on the passenger lists were Rachel’s (apparent) sister Esther Boorman Shirley (1797- ), her husband Edward and their 3 children.

- 1880 US census, Rachell Fullager is living with her son Robert and family in Athens Greene NY, age 77, listed incorrectly as a married mother-in-law born NY (rather than a widowed mother from England). Robert’s wife Charlotte’s father (Ben Cundall) was also living with them, which probably confused things.

- 1889: Rachel’s grave marker in Catskill NY clearly states that she was the wife of William Fullagar, and that she was born in 27 June 1802 and died 24 December 1889

RESEARCH NOTES
- Rachel Boorman born at Little Moatenden, dating from 1224, 1 1/2 miles north of Headcorn, Kent, located about 30 miles SE of London
- Rachel’s brother lived at Broadalbin NY. [name not yet known]
- Biddenden is mentioned, where ancestors are buried in the churchyard

- I currently list 2 different Rachel Boorman’s , both born about 1802:
Rachel Boorman (1802) d/o John Boorman (1775 - 1853) and Rachel Heath
Rachel Boorman (1802) d/o James Boorman and Mary Wood [this Rachel]
Both have not been proven.

- 1828 (from a 1952 letter between AE Mead and Wm Fullagar):
“Photostats from the Rachel (Fullagar) Clement’s family bible has an entry of April 1, 1828, my grandmother Charlotte (Fullagar) Mead was then only 2 yrs. W. Fullagar, wife Rachel (Boorman), Mary B. and my grandmother (the baby) started in a sailing vessel for a return trip to visit England. When 2 days out during a violetn storm they were shipwrecked off the Newfoundland banks. Taking their boats in the darkness they were rescued in daylight and return to New York port.”

The following marriage refers to a different, younger Rachel Boorman (1834 - 1911 ) d/o John Boorman (1804-1882) and Charlotte Crouch. :
- 1863 Marriage, Registered at Maidstone Sep 1863 v. 2a, p. 795
Stephen Taylor and Rachel Boorman
Stephen, widower, Rachel, spinst. Married Bethel Chapel, Union St Maidstone, of Marden, Kent. Stephen's father, William Taylor deceased, farm lab, Rachel's father, John Boorman, farmer. Thomas Rofe, Minister offic. Wits:Thomas Pearce, Jane Jenner For ages see 1871 census ...
- 1871 census has Rachel Taylor age 36 [born abt 1835] married to a Stephen Taylor age 71 [born abt 1800 - a generation older than Rachel]. So this likely refers to a different Rachel, (1834-1911) probably daughter of a different John Boorman (1804 - 1882) and Charlotte Crouch.
On 8 Mar 1822 when Rachel was 19, she married William FULLAGAR, son of Kelsham FULLAGAR & Elizabeth FIELD, in St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, England. Born on 14 Nov 1793 in Headcorn, Kent, England. Christened on 29 Dec 1793 in Headcorn, Kent, England. William died in Leeds, Green County, New York, USA, on 12 Apr 1866; he was 72. Buried abt 1866 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA.

- From letter written by A E Mead (Boorman/Fullagar researcher) on 30 May 1952:
"I am running a Want Ad in The Argus, Melbourne, Australia paper for a Mary May Parkin, age now about 80, a descendant of a Thomas Boorman (1808-1887) & Sarah Ann (Sanders) 1810-1863. In 1938 this Mary May Parkin was living in or near Warburton, Australia and the Vital Sttistics Dept there shows no death certificate for her, She was well versed on Boorman ancestry." [of 80 in 1938, she would have been born abt 1858 - link not yet determined]

From another researcher:
- 1881 UK Census:  Thomas Boorman (1807-1887), son of James Boorman (~1761-1845), was farming at Little Moatenden in 1881.  Same for 1871, and apparently 1861, 1851, and 1841 -- farm name not given for 1861 and 1851, but brief descriptions (90 acres, etc.) seem to be same farm as in 1881 and 1871; name is given for 1841 -- just Mottenden.  (Little and Great Moatenden are about 700 feet apart -- thus easily could be part of same farm.  In 1817, Thomas Boorman's father (and Rachel's, we think), James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845), was described in a book as "of Mottenden."   The family seems well-linked to Moatenden . . .
On 21 Oct 1828 when Thomas was 21, he first married Sarah Ann SAUNDERS in Smarden, Kent, England. Born abt 1809 in Smarden, Kent, England. Sarah Ann died in 1863; she was 54.
They had the following children:
530i.
Louisa BOORMAN (1830-1906)
531ii.
532iii.
533iv.
Elizabeth BOORMAN (1839-1918)
534v.
John BOORMAN (~1841-)
535vi.
Thomas second married Esther HOOK. Born abt 1809 in Tenterden, Kent, England.
298. John BOORMAN (James8, Thomas7, William6, Elizabeth HAYWARD5, Margaret BOORMAN4, William3, John2, John1).

- 1835 inherited 100 pounds in the will of his uncle Benjamin Boorman (husband of Jemima nee Parks), listed as “John Boorman son of the said James Boorman”
