- There are currently at least 2 different theories out there regarding this Thomas’s facts and family:
1) Thomas Boorman (1747 Biddenden - 1825 Tenterden/Sandhurst), married to Elizabeth Godden?, and son of Thomas Boorman [1722- 1797] and Elizabeth Badcock [who married 1753].
2) Thomas Boorman (1752 - 1825 Cranbrook), married to ???, son of Jonathan Boorman and Sarah

- Thomas was born 26 Jul 1747 Biddenden [don’t know primary source] well before his supposed parents’ marriage in 1753, so does he belong to this family? Or was he from a previous marriage? Another researcher comments: “I have queried myself and tried to prove whether or not Thomas Boorman b.1747 is the son of Thomas Boorman b.1722 and Elizabeth Badcock, or if he comes from another Boorman? The consensus seems to be that it is right but as more records come on line I am hoping to try and prove it one way or the other.”

- 4 children (Sophia, Saml, Charlotte and Mary) of Thomas and Elizabeth Boorman listed in “PARTICULAR BAPTIST,SANDHURST BY CRANBROOK,KENT,ENGLAND”, batch C09168-1, the same location of 2 baptisms for children of William and Mary Boorman (Copping, Elizabeth). We believe these Thomas and William were brothers, both children of Thomas Boorman and Elizabeth Badcock.
- Was he buried in Sandhurst as per another researcher? According to wikipedia and a map: The village of Sandhurst is in Kent near the border with East Sussex. It is situated very close to [NW of] Bodiam. It is located on the A268 near the villages [SSW] of Hawkhurst and [NW of] Northiam. Sandurst in SW of Rolvenden and Tenterden [15km? away] and is S of Cranbrook. Sandhurst is in the borough of Tunbridge Wells [ ??? Tunbridge Wells is quite a distance away].

If this is the John that married Esther:
- John & Esther ... are believed to have emigrated to the USA (Albany) around 1796.
- according to another researcher: Went to America in 1796. Letter exists sent to brother Benjamin Boorman.
- 1796: a letter from a John Boorman, dated May 1796 in New York, to his brother Benjamin back in Staplehurst [transcription received from another Boorman researcher in Jan 2013]. Based on location, date, and his mention of Esther, assume this is the same John Boorman we had some emails about earlier. Letter talks about the advantages of living in America compared to England: religious freedom, less taxes (based on property), freedom to take up business (and again in case of failure), “profession and possession of religion is respected” and sentiment not ridiculed, and better climate…. Bought farmers wheat in Albany near York at a cheaper price, for milling …. “When I was at Maryland we had a great deal of conversation about the propriety of purchasing slaves;” He seemed in favour of educating and enforcing the freeing of slaves, although he considers them to be “an ignorant idle thieving set” so they would first to have “the principles of morality instilled into them”…. Disadvantages in America: unevenness of country and prices of provisions. … Doesn’t plan on moving back to England, but perhaps will return for a visit. Considering investing with friends in land in northwest NY state to establish an English settlement / township.. … The final paragraph says:
“milling goes on pretty briskly. I have cleared about as much as it cost me coming over to America – please to inform my kinsman Boorman his son Denman is settled about forty miles back of Woopers [Coopers?] town and 30 miles from the Deleware river – in Ulster country, Rochester township; I forwarded the two letters I received with your packet; I saw John Denman the beginning of January; I did not know where they lived before; say they have cleared about 8 acres of land which is pretty good and sowed some wheat, built him a house and says there’s no fear of living, no rent to pay for seven years; then 1s6d per acre for as long as the world stands. They was all well, has taken 200 acres of land on an everlasting lease. Must conclude as my paper won’t admit of more. I wish to know what’s become of Brother James as he don’t write, nor you say a word about him; Brother Thomas I was a little astonished at your letter, but when I can find a place that I think will suit you will let you know. Esther joins with me in duty and love to all, father and mother, sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, from your affectionate brother John Boorman.

- 1797: from a 1999 letter from Connie Boorman, Headcorn, Kent: "I remembered the letter which Leonard Maquire sent me from a collection of "The Browne" American letters 1794-1831. I have read these through again and in the letter to me he says John Boorman and his wife esther had 3 children Esther, Mary & James, no mention of Esther's maiden name or dates for the children. The letter is written by the eldest daughter Esther to Ann Billingshurst 14th Dec 1797 from New York. She says her father had died and they were staying in New York. She mentions Mr & Mrs Denman and their log cabin and the farm and the bad time they were having. They had moved to more remote parts. As a postscript she puts James desires me to present his best respects to you and Nancy. I am happy to say he has got a place much to the satisfaction of us all."

- 1797: from a 1999 letter from Connie Boorman, Headcorn, Kent: "I remembered the letter which Leonard Maquire sent me from a collection of "The Browne" American letters 1794-1831. I have read these through again and in the letter to me he says John Boorman and his wife esther had 3 children Esther, Mary & James, no mention of Esther's maiden name or dates for the children. The letter is written by the eldest daughter Esther to Ann Billingshurst 14th Dec 1797 from New York. She says her father had died and they were staying in New York. She mentions Mr & Mrs Denman and their log cabin and the farm and the bad time they were having. They had moved to more remote parts. As a postscript she puts James desires me to present his best respects to you and Nancy. I am happy to say he has got a place much to the satisfaction of us all."

During the reign of King Edward II (1307-1327) Bartholomew de Badlesmere was charged with treason [he sided with the King's enemies, and Badlesmere's wife would not admit the Queen (Isabella) to the Badlesmere's castle] – the King captured the castle, and Badlesmere was hanged, drawn, and quartered, and his head put on the Burgh Gate at Canterbury. As a result of all this, Peasridge manor was forfeited to the crown. However, Badlesmere's son, Giles, soon had the manor restored to him by the next king, Edward III. One of Giles' sisters married John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, then inherited Peasridge after Giles died in 1338. De Veres held title to the property until the reign of King Henry VI when it was sold to St. Leger, who later sold it to Lone of Lancashire. Subsequently it went to John Weston, clothier, in the 1600s and that family owned it until the manor was sold to Joseph Wetherden and then to Thomas Oliver; the latter was the owner at the end of the 1700s. By 1841, our family of "Boormans of Gloversville/Broadalbin [NY]" was farming at Peasridge/Pound Farm.

Mottenden." Mottenden (now usually spelled Moatenden, and the site of a priory established
in 1224), is the farm next door to Little Moatenden, and undoubtedly both were once part of
the same estate. The Mottenden connection for the senior James Boorman is found in a 1894
book by Bernard Burke that is available on-line:
"He [Samuel Cotton] m. in the parish church of Maidstone, co. Kent, about 1817, Lydia,
daughter of James Boorman, Esq. of Mottenden, co. Kent, and sister of Thomas Boorman,

“I have the burial of a James Boorman (1761-1845) of Frittenden & wife Mary (1764-1844) of Frittenden who had 4 sons & 4 daughters mentioned on page 185 “Memorials of Smarden” (1886) by Rev Haslewood, whose burials are in the Smarden Church Yard but I believe this couple are the next older generation than James Boorman the grandfather of Jane Judge Boorman of Gloversville NY. I have always been interested in obtaining the names of these 4 sons & 4 daughters but to this writing have been unable.”
