“[Alice] was just great grandma Harper, from Lower darwen Lancashire. Alice lived in a very tiny stone cottage in Lower Darwen, Crossfield Cottages, no electricity, no running water, and a big black range fire to cook on. John Harper, who I thought was her husband, lived in the cottage with her until his death, he was always known as Uncle Jack. Alice Died in March 1954 aged 86 and is buried in the churchyard of St James’s Church Lower Darwen. Alice was a very well spoken lady, and knew exactly how to present a table correctly for dining, and that’s how it was done everytime we visited her. I Have a book of her mothers, Mary Ann Boorman called “ The Shilling Housekeeper” in it she wrote all her cooking tips and any notes she may want to keep. There is a poem in this book written by Alice”
“In the 1891 Census in which Alice was living in Cliff St Preston Lancs,that information came from Alice herself, to my father, she told him about working in a big house in Preston, and did he know where it was. If you look at the ‘ where born’ on the census you will see the Lenham in Kent. The name White, as well as being her sisters married, name comes I think from the Father of the Two boys Alfred White. He is named on my grandfather Arthurs (1897) marriage certificate. Name of father Alfred White, occupation Cotton Mill overlooker (deceased). I have no idea where Alfred was born or where he came from. In the piper tree on ancestry, They have Alfred white Warwickshire 1868. I had been told by my mother that Alice had been married and there were two children, I can’t find any marriage registration for the first marriage to Mr Fear. I believe the girls names were Violet and Cissie but not sure how true that is . Presuming there was a marriage between Alice and Mr Fear then no divorce, that will explain why she took the name of the other men, probably for respectability.”

From a descendant:
“[Alice] was just great grandma Harper, from Lower darwen Lancashire. Alice lived in a very tiny stone cottage in Lower Darwen, Crossfield Cottages, no electricity, no running water, and a big black range fire to cook on. John Harper, who I thought was her husband, lived in the cottage with her until his death, he was always known as Uncle Jack. Alice Died in March 1954 aged 86 and is buried in the churchyard of St James’s Church Lower Darwen. Alice was a very well spoken lady, and knew exactly how to present a table correctly for dining, and that’s how it was done everytime we visited her. I Have a book of her mothers, Mary Ann Boorman called “ The Shilling Housekeeper” in it she wrote all her cooking tips and any notes she may want to keep. There is a poem in this book written by Alice”
“In the 1891 Census in which Alice was living in Cliff St Preston Lancs,that information came from Alice herself, to my father, she told him about working in a big house in Preston, and did he know where it was. If you look at the ‘ where born’ on the census you will see the Lenham in Kent. The name White, as well as being her sisters married, name comes I think from the Father of the Two boys Alfred White. He is named on my grandfather Arthurs (1897) marriage certificate. Name of father Alfred White, occupation Cotton Mill overlooker (deceased). I have no idea where Alfred was born or where he came from. In the piper tree on ancestry, They have Alfred white Warwickshire 1868. I had been told by my mother that Alice had been married and there were two children, I can’t find any marriage registration for the first marriage to Mr Fear. I believe the girls names were Violet and Cissie but not sure how true that is . Presuming there was a marriage between Alice and Mr Fear then no divorce, that will explain why she took the name of the other men, probably for respectability.”
