- After his mother’s death in 1929, Bill moved from Middleburgh NY to Broadalbin NY to live with a family named Boorman (Broadalbin is about 40 miles north of Middleburgh – a significant distance in those days). … [Jane and John Boormans were] two relatively old siblings, brother and sister, never married, with quite limited experience with children. [Yet they] provided a home beginning summer 1929 for a defacto orphan boy of 13 they had never seen. Bill probably had never heard of the Boormans. They showed up in Middleburgh on Sunday after his mother's funeral and offered Bill a place to live – room, board, and clothes. (Apparently they heard of Maude Fullagar’s death from a friend in Middleburgh.) These Boormans offered to help because the Fullagar family had aided them when they arrived in the United States in about 1883 from Kent England. In addition, the Boormans and Fullagars were related. The Boorman family that arrived in 1883 included mother [Eliza Judge Boorman 1834-1901] and father [John Boorman 1831-1918] and 7 children (2 other children died in England at birth or when very young). When the Boormans, John and Eliza and family, came to the United States in about 1883 from England, they first lived with Bill’s grandfather, Robert N. Fullagar, and his family on the Fullagar farm in Greene County, New York, just west of Leeds. [This farm, known as “The Old Homestead,” had a (boarding) house that could accommodate up to 40 guests.] Robert N. Fullagar was the son of Rachel Boorman (1802-1889) and William Fullagar (1793-1866), both of Headcorn Kent… who had immigrated to NY in 1822 after their marriage in London. In about 1833, William and Rachel Boorman Fullagar bought the farm near Leeds NY, where Rachel and their Robert Boorman and family lived in 1883…. Family lore suggests that the elder Boorman male of the 1883 arrivals, John James[?] Boorman (1831-1918) is related to this Rachel Boorman.
- 1929: “William A. Fullagar lived with two of these Boorman [siblings] beginning in 1929, siblings Jennie Boorman (1864-1948) and John Boorman (1865-1945) – apparently WAF’s 2nd cousins 1x removed. (And, in one newspaper note, WAF is described as being a cousin of Jennie and John Boorman.) … The Boormans with whom Bill Fullagar lived during 3 years of high school were Jane (Jennie) and John. ... Based on his comments, he often saw their sisters Rachel, Elizabeth, and Ada. In 1930, the US Census records (Bill does not show up on this enumeration) showed that Jennie and John lived on Bridge Street in Broadalbin; based on the order in which the streets were listed and the order of listings of people on those streets, the Boormans and Bill lived at the end of Bridge Street close to Kennyetto Creek. Today, the Boormans’ brick house is 39 Bridge Street, and a photograph taken in 2012 is below. (Eric Fullagar was shown the house by Bill Fullagar, and has confirmed that this is the Boorman house; it also appears to be the house in the background of Bill Fullagar and Evelyn Hoyt’s 1938 wedding pictures.) “
“It had to be very difficult moving away from family and friends after Bill's mother died in 1929. But, the Boormans were good and kind people. In Broadalbin, Bill played basketball and baseball, and participated in many other activities. Bill did get to go back to Middleburgh to visit while a boy, although I don't know how often (see newspaper notes below). After graduating from college in 1936, and marrying in 1938, Bill visited the Boormans when possible, but travel was difficult and expensive in those days. (From when I was a child, I vaguely remember the Boormans, mostly Ada and Jennie -- according to brief reports in local newspapers, we visited the Boormans in Broadalbin at least 8 times between 1938-1943.)”
“Growing up in Middleburgh (until he was nearly 14), Bill managed to see and experience more than just that village. Using train, train handcar, wagon, an occasional car or truck, and probably horse, he was able to go to nearby towns and countryside. He quickly realized that he did not want to spend his life in that small, rural village. Then he suddenly had to move to Broadalbin and live with strangers – the Boormans – while going to high school. These experiences exposed Bill to new people, places, and ideas. “
- 1930: Published 8 Jan 1930 in the Broadalbin newspaper: “William Fullagar has returned to John Bowmans’ [sic] after spending his vacation with friends in Middleburg.” Bill must have spent at least part of the 1929/1930 Christmas vacation in Middleburg with family and friends. This is only about 6 months after his mother died, and in January 1930 Bill was barely 14.
- 1930: “The 13 November 1930 Evening Record of Amsterdam NY contains a report about Broadalbin's basketball team:
“Basket Shooter’s First Game. Broadalbin HIgh school’s basketball five is in fine fettle for the opening game of the season, which will be played tomorrow night on the local court, with the Gold Stars of Gloversville as opponents. Washburn and MacVean have been going well in the forward positions. Hoag is jumping high and fast at center, and Coon, Fullagar and Jennings are developing into very dependable guards. A preliminary between the girls’ teams will be played at 7:30.” [The center, Leverne Hoag, was a neighbor and friend of Bill’s; in the picture below, Leverne is on the left and Bill on the right (since Bill was 6-feet tall, Leverne was rather tall) - see photo. We don’t know the occasion for their “dress,” but perhaps it was the 1931 filibuster parade in Broadalbin -- see separate story about Bill and the Boormans based on newspaper “clippings” from 1929-1961.]”
- After college graduation in 1936, Bill visited the Boormans quite often. That is where Bill and Evelyn Hoyt married on 15 April 1938 – Broadalbin was home for Bill. They were married at the home of Rev. Crapo, with Paul G. Bulger and Marion Mleczek attending (Marion was to become Mrs. Bulger just 4 months later). “Growing up in Middleburgh (until he was nearly 14), Bill managed to see and experience more than just that village. Using train, train handcar, wagon, an occasional car or truck, and probably horse, he was able to go to nearby towns and countryside. He quickly realized that he did not want to spend his life in that small, rural village. Then he suddenly had to move to Broadalbin and live with strangers – the Boormans – while going to high school. These experiences exposed Bill to new people, places, and ideas. “
- 1930: Published 8 Jan 1930 in the Broadalbin newspaper: “William Fullagar has returned to John Bowmans’ [sic] after spending his vacation with friends in Middleburg.” Bill must have spent at least part of the 1929/1930 Christmas vacation in Middleburg with family and friends. This is only about 6 months after his mother died, and in January 1930 Bill was barely 14.
- 1930: “The 13 November 1930 Evening Record of Amsterdam NY contains a report about Broadalbin's basketball team:
“Basket Shooter’s First Game. Broadalbin HIgh school’s basketball five is in fine fettle for the opening game of the season, which will be played tomorrow night on the local court, with the Gold Stars of Gloversville as opponents. Washburn and MacVean have been going well in the forward positions. Hoag is jumping high and fast at center, and Coon, Fullagar and Jennings are developing into very dependable guards. A preliminary between the girls’ teams will be played at 7:30.” [The center, Leverne Hoag, was a neighbor and friend of Bill’s; in the picture below, Leverne is on the left and Bill on the right (since Bill was 6-feet tall, Leverne was rather tall) - see photo. We don’t know the occasion for their “dress,” but perhaps it was the 1931 filibuster parade in Broadalbin -- see separate story about Bill and the Boormans based on newspaper “clippings” from 1929-1961.]”
- After college graduation in 1936, Bill visited the Boormans quite often. That is where Bill and Evelyn Hoyt married on 15 April 1938 – Broadalbin was home for Bill. They were married at the home of Rev. Crapo, with Paul G. Bulger and Marion Mleczek attending (Marion was to become Mrs. Bulger just 4 months later).
