DEATH OF MR F E COMPTON
Considerable surprise and regret will be felt throughout the city at the news of the death of Mr Frederick E Compton, of Lower Queen street, which occurred yesterday evening. Mr Compton, who was a sufferer from heart disease as well as being affected with dropsy, had not been in good health since Christmas last, and during the past month had been seriously ill and confined to his room at his residence in Vincent street. About the 10th instant, however, he began to improve and on Monday week last was so much better that he shifted his quarters to the Waverly Hotel to be nearer his business. He was up and able to give instructions concerning his affairs, but was not sufficiently robust to leave the house. Yesterday afternoon he saw Mr J Batger, one of his oldest friends, and about four o’clock came down to the dining room to have some food, which he had ordered. He was partaking of a chop when an acquaintance entered and congratulated him upon his improved appearance. Mr Compton half turned in his chair to reply, but immediately forward on the floor. Those present rushed to his assistance, but before they could raise him life was extinct, death apparently having been instantaneous. Medical assistance was promptly sent for, and Dr Hooper, who had been attending Mr Compton in his recent illness, was speedily present. He stated that death occurred from a sudden attack of heart disease.
Mr Compton was well known in the city, particularly in shipping circles, and bore the reputation of being a shrewd business man and of strict integrity. He was born in Prince Edward Island in 1828, and migrating from his birthplace at manhood, sojourned for some time in San Francisco. After a somewhat long stay there, he came down to Victoria and embarked in business as a drysalting merchant in Melbourne, meeting with considerable success. Eighteen years ago he decided to come to New Zealand, and took up his quarters in Auckland, carrying on his provision business in Lower Queen street. When the Harbour Board reclamations were finished, Mr Compton leased a section and, in conjunction with Mr John Batger, erected the substantial premises where he carried on business till his death. About four years ago he disposed of his provision business to Mr R S Reynolds, and devoted his energies to the furtherance of the interest of the Auckland Tug Company. This concern, whose inauguration was due to his energy, was conducted by him as managing director with spirit and success up to the present time. Mr Compton took great interest in all local maritime concerns, and was for several years a member of the Harbour Board, and in 1881 and 1882 presided over its affairs as chairman, during which time he proved himself to be one of the most energetic and persistent advocates for the construction of the Calliope Dock. He leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter to mourn his decease. His eldest son, who has reached maturity, is in business in San Francisco, but Mrs Compton and the younger children reside in Auckland. His funeral is arranged to leave the Waverly Hotel tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at three o’clock for the Symonds street Cemetery.

- 1890 obituary (slightly different version), published 24 Jun 1890, Auckland Star [exerpts only]
DEATH OF MR F E COMPTON. A SUDDEN END.
He was manager of the Tugboat Comapny in Auckland
Mr Compton had been a resident of this city for the last eighteen years.
He was a native of Prince Edward Island, having been born there in 1828.
When he attained his majority he went to San Francisco, and then came down to the colonies.
In Melbourne he started in business as a drysalting merchant, and was fairly successful.
He came to Auckland about the year 1872, and for some years carried on a large provision business in Lower Queen Street, where he had erected substantial premises. Four years ago he sold his provision business to Mr R S Reynolds and took the management of the newly formed Tug-boat Company.
For several years Mr Compton was a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, and for two years, 1881 and 1882, was chairman of that body.
In his early life Mr Compton was at sea on Nova Scotian vessels for some time, and there gained that practical maritime experience which proved so useful to him in after life.
Mr Compton leaves a widow, two sons, and a daughter. About a year ago, his second son died. His eldest son is now in business in San Francisco.
Today the flags of the various vessels in port were flown at half masts ...[and on]and on many of the shipping and business establishments in town.

-  Ronald COMPTON (deceased) comes through Ernest Frederick COMPTON, the son of William Spencer COMPTON.  Ernest was born on 8th March 1828 on Prince Edward Island, Canada.  He is in New South Wales in 1864, when be marries Emma Louisa ABBOTT.  Their marriage was registered in TUMUT in New South Wales. It can be assumed that Ernest made the voyage from Canada to Australia because of the Gold Rush and there were gold fields in Adelong, which is near Tumut.  The family moved to a village on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales called Tumberumba.  However, Emma was in Sydney in a Private Hospital in the inner city suburb of Balmain in 1866. she gave birth to a son Ernest Spencer Compton.  Sadly, the family returned to Tumberumba and shortly after baby Ernest died.  Another son was born in 1867 in the village of Tumberumba, William Spencer Compton (named after his grandfather).  William survived and not long after his birth the family sailed from either Melbourne or Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand.  Over the years they had another five children.  The first born George Frederick Compton b.1869 died at 7 mnths, Thomas was born 1871, and Emma Louisa born 1872 died at 10 months.

... Emma sail[ed] to either Melbourne or Sydney and [with] William now 7 and Thomas 4 ...  We know Emma arrived in August 1874 per “Hero” with the boys, she stayed for awhile in Melbourne and then sailed up the coast to Sydney.  She returned to NZ before 1874 a she gave birth to a daughter Emma Louisa in 1874 and she died at 10 months.  It appears that William and Thomas did not return to NZ with their mother, ....  Next child born was Ernest Frederick Compton 1878, he survives and marries in Sydney, NSW, next child in Maud Plevna Compton in 1878, she also survives and later marries in Sydney, NSW.  However, the next child Elizabeth born 1879 died at 7 months.  Ernest Frederick COMPTON born Prince Edward Island died in Auckland, NZ in 1890.  Not long after his death the family or what is left of them, Emma the mother and her son Ernest and daughter Maud left Auckland and sailed to Sydney.

- 1903 DEATH: age 66, died suddenly in 1903. Is d.o.d on tombstone 22 Feb 1908?
Published on 2/25/1903 in the Summerside Journal, Compton, 5 1, Death of George Compton.
Obituaries of George Compton (via Bob Butt: The Morning Guardian printed George Compton's obituary on February 23, 1903 on page 8. The Daily Patriot printed his obituary on February 21, 1903 on page 4.):
- The funeral of the late George Compton St Eleanor’s takes place this afternoon at 2 o’clock, to the St. Eleanor’s Episcopal Cemetery.
- The sudden death of George Compton, St. Eleanor’s which occurred Friday night atout 10.30 o’clock, was a painful surprise to this community. About half an hour before his death Mr. Compton, always conspicuous for his robust and healthy appearance, was sitting by the fireside conversing pleasantly with his wife and daughter, and apparently in his usual good health. Just before retiring he remarked that he did not feel well. A physician was sent for but he had expered before medical aid arrived. Deceased was 66 years of age and was one of the most prominent and popularr farmers in this district. Besides a widow the following four sons and five daughters are left to mourn: Clifton A. of Wetaskawin, Alberta; William D., St Eleanor’s; Fred G., St. Eleanor’s; Leopold at home; Mrs. Sydney Richardson, St Eleanor’s; Mrs. Henry Compton St Eleanor’s, Mrs. L.A. Haszard, Charlottetown, Mrs. D.R. McLennan, Charlottetown and Miss Elanore at home.
- The sad news of the sudden death of Mr. George Compton will be heard with regret, not only in St. Eleanor’s, but also throughout the west and in Charloottetown, where he was well known, respected and esteemed. The deceased had been ailing for some months past from rheumatism, but no serious results were anticipated. Last evening he complained of not feeling well, and went to bed. A doctor was sent for before, but when he arrived Mr. Compton had passed away. The deceased was born in Charlottetown 66 years ago. In 1862 he removed to St Eleanors, where he engaged in farming. He became recognized as an authority on agriculture, and has delivered many practical addresses on the subject. He was twice married, first to Miss Compton of St Eleanors, and in 1895 to Mrs. Thomas McKinley, sister of Messrs Richard Hunt and William T Hunt. Among the surviving members of his family are three daughters, Mrs. David McLennan, Mrs. Louis A. Haszard, of Charlottetown, Mrs. Henry Compton, of St. Eleanor’s and Miss Clemmie at home [think this is a misprint - Eleanor was at home], Clifton the eldest son is engaged in busi- at Wetaskawin, Alberta, and there are three sons at home, Willilam, Fred and Leopold. The funeral will take place at St Eleanors on Monday at 2 p.m.

[A] legal document drawn up in 1903 showing George Compton's assets at the time of his death. He died intestate. It shows the number of animals, tools, farm equipment, etc. he had when he died. By the way his second wife was Janet Hunt.

From family and other researchers:
- TRAITS: big. Known as Big George.
- MARRIAGE: Married by license Rev. Herbert Read. Witnesses Benjamin Darby, Victoria Compton, Charles Compton , Benjamin Mills Eliza and George were second cousins. Big George was a brother of Charles who married Eliza's sister.
- George Compton was a farmer in St. Eleanors after he moved from Charlottetown when he was a young man. George Compton took up farming on land his wife Eliza inherited from her father, Thomas Compton. My guess is that George learned farming from an uncle, a member of the Haszard family. They owned a lot of land. They lived just outside of Charlottetown in what was called Bellevue. George's mother was Harriet Clarissa Haszard and she married William Spencer Compton. Harriet and her husband died relatively young and are buried in the Protestant cemetery in Charlottetown. My guess is that George Compton and his siblings were adopted by relatives (Haszards).
- Big George was a brother of Charles who married Eliza’s sister. After Eliza's death George remarried to Janet, surname unknown.

RESEARCH NOTES
- Not much was previously known about her; originally entered as Jane.  Then I found a newspaper transcription for PEI marriages on the islandregister site. Could Thomas's daughter Jane Hunt be the same as this Janet Hunt who was married in 1863 to Capt. Thomas MacKinley?

- Another family researcher confirms this: “It is clear in my papers that Janet first married Thomas MacKinlay (my g grandmothers brother) who died in 1859 [perhaps 1889?- his kids were born after 1859] and later married George Compton. “
“on the family chart ...Jennet Hunt ( Janet) married Thomas Mackinlay and Thomas [Hunt] also had another daughter named Mary Dumaresque  who was born in 1834 and died in 1850. According to a PEI paper “fatal accident at St Eleanor's  eldest daughter of Thomas Hunt  lamp exploded when she was lighting it. I also see a note that Thomas MacKinlay died  and it seems she remarried to a George Compton.”
They had no children.
302. Edward COMPTON (William Spencer9, Edward8, Thomas7, Ann6, John5, John4, Tristram3, John “the Elder”2, Edward1). Born on 8 Mar 1837 in Charlottetown, PEI. Christened on 10 Mar 1837 in St Pauls Anglican Church, Charlottetown, PEI, Canada. Edward died abt 1837; he was <1.
