Newman Hastings Compton
May 25, 1917 - August 7, 2014

The children of Newman Compton would like to invite the relatives and friends to a Celebration of the Life of their father, Newman Compton who died August 7, 2014. The service will be held at All Saints Parish at 901 New Warrington Road, on Monday August 11, starting at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Mr. Compton was the son of Leslie H. and Bessie F (Neville) Compton. Newman was born on a farm on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. His father died when he was nine years old. He then attended Chesterfield, a boy's boarding school, while his mother became a practical nurse.

After he graduated he eventually found work in a paper mill in Ocean Falls, B.C., Canada for 35 cents an hour. For the next 45 years he followed the paper industry. He obtained his first supervisory position in 1948 with the St. Regis Paper Company at Tacoma, WA. He became a United States citizen 5 years later after attending night classes at Lincoln High School.

In 1965, St. Regis Paper chose Mr. Compton build a new paper mill in Monticello, MS, which at that time was the largest computerized mill in the world. The highlight of his career was being the St. Regis representative to rebuild a mill in Aballa Sweden. Newman retired from St. Regis, Pensacola on his 65th birthday.

When Mr. Compton arrived in Ocean Falls, he was 19 years old and met his lifelong love Agnes Kelly, the daughter of the Rev. Peter and Mrs. Gertrude Kelly, a Methodist missionary. Newman and Agnes married in 1938 and over the course of time; five children were born to the couple. Newman always said that Agnes provided the encouragement that he found to be essential during his career. After 60 years of marriage, she died October 24, 1998 and he has missed her every day.

He is survived by three daughters and one son. Linda Dorothy (Compton) Krueger, Sara Melanie (Compton) Kooley, Leslie Neville Harvey Compton, Jane Elizabeth (Compton) Fuller, ten Grandchildren and 25 Great grandchildren. Also numerous other close family relations.

He was preceded in death his youngest daughter, Mary Gertrude (Compton) Pounds on July 17, 2005.

Mr. Compton was a life long member of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. In every church they attended, Newman served on the Vestry and Agnes the Altar Guild. He was one of the founding members of All Saints Anglican Church here in Pensacola. In his later years he was awarded the Title of Senior Warden Emeritus. The family crest is from Psalm 127 "Except the Lord build the house, the servants labor in vain.

In liu of flowers, the family requests contributions supporting the Azaela Trace Heritage Foundation 10100 Hillview Dr. Pensacola, FL 32514.

On 16 Oct 1938 when Newman Hastings was 21, he married Agnes Lillian KELLY, daughter of Father Peter KELLY & Gertrude, in Ocean Falls, BC, Canada. Born ca 1920. Agnes Lillian died in Pensacola, Escambia, Florida, USA, on 24 Oct 1998; she was 78.

HERITAGE: Haida Indian ancestry (father may have been a Haida chief or elder) (book about family mission ship). - book was “The Roar of the Breakers”

Her father was Father Peter Kelly, purebred Haida. He had 7 or 8 sons and then finally an only daughter Agnes. Newman and Agnes’ visits to Duncan area would sometimes last 2 - 3 months in the summer months. Agnes was quite fair, didn’t show her heritage. Nell Andrew quite liked her and her soft spoken manner. Agnes would attend services at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Duncan on Sundays, wearing a lacy knit covering (doily-like) on her head.
