RESEARCH NOTES:
- died 1910 or 1940? 14 Oct or 19 Oct? 4pm? - dates may be confused with spouse.
On 19 Aug 1891 when Maria Agnes* was 27, she married Cephas M. GRIGG, son of James GRIGG (1825-1912) & Elizabeth DOWNING (1822-1873). Born on 30 Nov 1857 in West Devon, PEI, Canada. Cephas M. died on 14 Oct 1942; he was 84. Buried in West Devon, PEI, Canada. Occupation: Farmer. Religion: Methodist And UC.

- Notes from Laing MacDowell:
> A devoted churchman of whom, upon his demise, it was said in all sincerity “One of God’s gentlemen has gone home”.
> For 8 years prior to demise he was confined to a wheelchair
> Arthur& Melissa MacDowell and Laing visited them several times in the 1920s. when Al & Ruby lived nearby.
> With regard to Uncle Ceph. I visited his home and his sons many times. In fact I baby sat and served him food while he was on his death bed the week before he died. Do not remember going to his funeral but did visit his tombstone in West Devon later.
> BURIAL written by Laing MacDowell: Cephas is buried on the southeast corner of the West Devon United Church grave yard. His grave was surrounded by a big old lilac bush.
Often, I stood there and paid tribute to him. I have once seen a
picture of him; a very stern, strong looking, and I believe a
stubborn old Cornish westcountry man. You could tell he was a man of will; that was the blood of men who carved an empire for the monarch of Britain. He had the steel and courage in him to support the Westley's as they conducted their revivals in Cornwall and West Devon. In fact, it was those fearless men of North Cornwall and West Devon who eventually split with the more formal Methodist movement and formed the Bible Christian movement. Indeed, the present United Church in West Devon, PEI was a Bible Christian church. It was built on land donated by James Grigg, and it was part of his original property. The denomination, the Christian and Missionary Alliance was a direct product of the Cornish Bible Christian movement. I suspect that our J.S. Allen was also the product of the same Bible Christian movement.

Enumerated by James Squarebrigs [sic]

Notes from a descendant:
- the Squarebriggs'/Squarebridge were from Stanley Bridge area of PEI. …. they were mariners and ship builders as well as merchants and New London bay was where they first settled.
- James D Squarebriggs (my grandpa), who married Margaret McDonald (my grannie Squarebriggs) was the son of Cpt.John MacLeod Squarebriggs and Agnes Biggar.*  He had 12 siblings.  He is under #16 in "The Descendants of Squarebridge" on the Island Register.  www.islandregister.com/squarebriggs1.html.  He died 20 years before I was born so I never met him.  My dad died when I was three.  I have some memories.  Margaret (grannie) I met at daddy's funeral of course but have no memory of her.  We visited her when I was around five and I remember her being very sweet, as well as having sweet treats for me!  I know from archived newspapers that James' brother George Henry Squarebriggs came up from Massachsetts for his funeral. The Squarebriggs' were always up and down the eastern Seaboard for business, work, visiting relatives, etc.
 * As I look around more, I am not 100% sure that those were his parents.  I say this because I know that other entries in the "Descendants of Squarebridge" are incorrect.  At times I'm not sure whether he was James C. or James D.  I know for certain though that his and Margaret's 4 kids are my dad and uncle and aunts.

Notes from Laing MacDowell:
> Jim Squarebriggs was a very successful farmer in Miscouche P.E.I. and owned 200 acres, barns, cattle, horses machinery etc.
> He used to go on binges once a year but always attended to the farm. He fell off a load of hay and broke his back and died.
> His sons were both in the first world war . Wes got a Government job (Dept Fisheries) and Jack tried to take over the farm. A few years later the farm was seized for non-payment of accounts and mother was left destitute. She stayed a winter with her sister Melissa MacDowell and in the Spring went West to her daughter. Returned to Summerside and had an apartment. Jack reported to have married and had a daughter. Girls married well "out West."
> Dora and husband had a Mobile home in Florida and Eric and I visited them there in 1971.
