Andrew and Jerauld L. French, in equal shares to them or to the survivor. I am making this bequest to said Jerauld L French inasmuch as he has befriended me financially in time of great need. At the time of his death, value of his Personal Estate was listed as none. Value of his Real Estate was listed as follows: Land and buildings at 167-8 Auburn St, Cambridge: $500.00. House and land at 164 Auburn St: $500.00 [noted that this was probably extremely undervalued].
RESEARCH NOTES:
From another researcher:
- Charles E. Andrew married Mary Josephine McAvoy on April 17, 1907. He gave his age as 29, the same as Mary. He was probably 36 at the time. Marriage was performed by John J. Farrell, a clergyman, who resided at 34 Holyoke St. in Cambridge. Perhaps an Episcopal minister? Uncle Ed listed his job as a machinist.
- Uncle Ed Andrew's first wife was Mary. My mom and her sisters called her Aunt Mae. I'm pretty certain she was born in Ireland. She developed serious heart problems and was bed ridden for a year or so or longer until her death. I think Aunt Mae was on the stern side. Maybe it was her nature or she took orders from Uncle Ed. Uncle Ed is buried next to her in Cambridge Cemetery. Within a year of Aunt Mae's death, I believe Uncle Ed married Grace Powell. I think he hired her as a "manager"......responsible for renting out rooms, etc. This was during the Depression years. I think Grace was a widow with one son. I believe she was originally from Illinois or another mid-west state. Uncle Ed apparently liked her a lot and they got married. I have seen ads in old editions of the Cambridge Chronicle, going back to the 1930's, in which Grace advertised rooms at the 2 Auburn Street, Cambridge locations. They were across the street from each other and the buildings still stand. The ads mentioned that the rooming house "caters to the finest clientele." I suppose that was a clever way to say, "no riff raff need apply." As I mentioned in a previous email, Grace developed dementia and her son took possession of the rooming houses, perhaps managing them in a absentee fashion. The son let the buildings deteriorate and they were sold by him. Apparently, he was an indifferent landlord. I'm pretty sure my mom didn't know Grace Powell because my mom got married before Grace arrived on the scene. And I don't think my mom visited Uncle Ed after her marriage. She was rather shocked to learn that she and her sisters and their mom (Uncle Ed's sister, Elizabeth) were left nothing in Uncle Ed's will.
- Regarding Charles Edward Andrew on the U.S. Census and other things on Ancestry.Com. He was tricky to find, since he was always listed as "Andrews" and that doesn't come up with the "Andrew" in a search. He also seemed to taken liberties when declaring his age or birth date. In the Can. 1901 he was listed as born May 22 1876, in the 1910 it says abt 1880, 1920 says abt 1876, 1930 says abt 1878. On his naturalization papers Sept 20 1915 his birth date is listed as May 21 1881, and his W.W. I draft registration he says May 22 1875. His wife is just as bad - in 1910 she's 34 to his 30, 1920 they're both 44, and in 1930 he's 52 and she's 51. On the 1930 she's Mary J., in the 1923 Cambridge Directory she's Mary E. Unfortunately, 1923 is the only year they have a directory for Cambridge. Mary and Edna Compton were with them in 1930, and they had 15 lodgers - quite the boarding house, it was valued at $15,000.00 according to the census. He immigrated anywhere from 1900 to 1903 according to the censuses, but we know he was in Canada in 1901. Also, since he was still on the 1930 census, your about date for his death is a little off. I wasn't able to find his death. (Haven't found his baptism, either) He married Mary in the U.S. since her date of immig was 1898.
On 17 Apr 1907 when Charles Edward “Ed” was 31, he first married Mary Josephine “Mae” McAVOY in MA, USA. Born abt 1879 in Ireland. Mary Josephine “Mae” died in Cambridge, MA, USA, aft 1930; she was 51. Buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
Charles Edward “Ed” second married Grace F. POWELL. Born ca 1875.
Grace was Ed Andrew’s second wife.

MARRIAGE: twice. Frederick Webster. Witnesses L. Richardson, K. H. Richardson
CHILDREN: no children by first marriage to Marie; had 7 living children by Elizabeth. One infant died.
HEALTH: Lame. Frederick George Compton fell off a wagon when he was a young boy according to my mom. He damaged his hip. An operation of sorts was performed but was not successful (a hot iron was used to “repair” his hip). So he walked with a limp. Over time this created a serious health problem because he no doubt favored one hip over the other. I'm sure this affected his ability to perform farm chores. He also ran into financial problems during the depression years as did many others.

- 1936 obituary published 1 Apr 1936:
“MR. FREDERICK GEORGE COMPTON
“The passing of Mr. Frederick Compton whose death occurred at his home in St. Eleanors on March 21st has cast a gloom over the whole community where he was so well and favorably known.
“The late Mr. Compton was born at St. Eleanors sixty-two years ago. He belonged to one of the oldest and most highly respected families in the province. He was the third eldest son of the late George Compton and a grandson of Major Thomas Compton who was the founder of St. Eleanor’s district and who by his efforts, did so much for the improvement and development of St. Eleanors in its early days.
“With the exception of a few years spent in the United States, when a a young man, the late Mr. Compton spent all his life in ST. Eleanors. He was lame from a small boy but he bore his affliction without murmuring and worked on his farm to the best of his ability. Failing health and financial difficulties caused him to abaondon the farm, and come to live in the village of St. Eleanors. Feeling crushed, his eyesight failing, his health gone, the burden of life was too heavy for his weakened frame, and his sensitive spirit took its flight. Fred as he was better known, was one of nature’s noblemen. His hospitality was know far and wide. A good neighbor, a kind husband and father, and in sickness or trouble he was always ready with an extended hand to help both rich and poor. His host of friends mourn the passing of one of their best and most worthy friends. It was his lot to pass through the deep waters of affliction but we are told by a sacred writer that those that come out of great tribulation shall be arrayed in white robes and serve before the Throne, and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them and wipe away all tears from their eyes. These are comforting words for the bereaved ones. For with the rod of chastisement goes the precious promise of the father’s love.
“The late Mr. Compton was twice married, his first wife was Marie Munro of Georgetown who predeceased him some thirty years ago, his second wife was Elizabeth Andrew of No. St. Eleanors, who with seven children survive him, namely, Marie, Edna, Eleanor, Sadie in the United States; Lillian, Clifton and Louise at home. On the 24th of March a large crowd of sorrowing friends gathered at the home to pay their last respects to a departed friend and neighbor. He was quietly but tenderly laid to rest in St. John’s Cemetery where he was a life long member of the church.
“To the sorrowing widow and family, brothers, sisters and relatives, heart felt sympathy is extended.”
They had the following children:
i.
Marie Victoria “Mary” COMPTON (1909-2005)
ii.
Edna Eliza Cundall COMPTON (1910-2005)
