"Summerside and Western Guardian
Laid to Rest - The funeral of the late Thos. Andrew took place from his late home Monday afternoon and was largely attended. A short service was held at the home in St. Eleanor's after which services were held in the Baptist Church and were conducted by Rev. A. K. Herman, who spoke from John 11-28, "The Master is come and calleth for thee". Two favorite hymns. "Abide with me" and "Forever with the Lord", were sung and Mr. George Bowness sang a solo, "Face to Face". Burial was made in Peoples Cemetery. The Honorable pall bearers were: Sydney Richardson, Albert Tanton, Benjamin Tanton, Geo. McGougan, George Jelly and James Harris. The active ball bearers were Austin Scales, Walter Lefurgy, Horace Andrew, Raymond Andrew, Harry Andrew and Richard Hunt."

Richard and his older brother John, (who founded the Raimes Clark pharmaceutical company in Edinburgh in 1816) “... came from an old Yorshire family, whose ancestry can be traced all the way back to the 11th century, when a Rames was awarded land and a castle for their role in the Norman conquest. Richard and John’s family came from the town of Wheldrake in North Yorshire, where the family had been farming land for over 300 years.”

George and Thomas Blanshard, nephews of John and Richard, were brought into the firm, contributing a great deal to its devcelopment. George Blanshard was qualified as a pharmacist and he and Richard Raimes both served in senior positions in the North British Pharmaceutical Society, as President and Chair respectively.”

The family connection continued through Richard’s sons, John Fortune Raimes and Richard Raimes Jr. The both became partners and ultimately took over the running of the firm. When Thomas Blanshard died in 1882, the company name then reverted to Raimes & Co. Richard Raimes retired aged 71 and went on to live to the ripe old age of 90, reportedly never having had a serioius illness unti the last week of his life. He was ill for just one day before he died”
“Unfortunately, Richard’s sons did not enjoy the same good health as their father. John Fortune Raimes was subject to fainting fits and collapsed and died on the steps of Smith’s Place House in 1887 at the age of just 37. His brother Richard then [in 1888] took into partnership a former apprentice and traveller for the firm, Richard Clark, to help run the business. Richard Raimes survived only another three years, dying of pleurisy in 1891 at the age of 40.”...

“... a collection of letters between John Fortune Raimes’s widow Fanny, her daughter Helena (Nelly), and the firm’s solicitors, Mr Robertson and his son, young “Mr Bobby”, or “Groggy” as Helena was prone to call him. Fanny and Nelly obviouisly viewed the Robertsons as freinds and advisors, as well as “men of business”. The sent regular chatty letters, asking not just for funds, but for advice and help in dealing with servants and tradesment. The letters, which span four decades and both world wars, contain intriguing glimpses of a changing world. Fanny and Nelly were initially wealthy women, having inherited a large part of the Raimes fortune, but a stime wore on this rapidly diminished ... after 2 generations the money was gone.”

- According to a family story, Major Fred May was injured in WW1 when he was buried alive by a shell at Ypres and was dug out by his men. Don’t know where he was hospitalized.

- 1921 married in PEI after mother died.

- Notes on Fred May from his niece Harriet Andrew (2006): Uncle Fred [May] would dress nephews in his uniforms. [Also have pictures of his wife Mabel dressing up in uniform.] He was brought up by his grandmother and aunt – don’t know where his mother was. Had a hard life: entered a military academy early. Scared of kids – didn’t know how to act with them. Aunt Mabel had a stillborn baby near the time that Harriet Andrew was born – wanted to adopt Harriet buy Nell said no. Harriet used to visit them a lot and help out with baking, dusting and looking at photo albums to avoid dusting! At first, she was intimidated by her Uncle Fred until she discovered his weak point: shortbread. One day he came into the kitchen to sneak some of the shortbread she was making and whispered in her ear – don’t tell your aunt! Harriet realized he was just like a big kid, and was better after that. Uncle Fred had a 2-door vehicle (why not 4 – would have been easier to get in and out of?) and was always dropping crowds of relatives and visitors around. Sometimes he was quite overwhelmed, and looks that way in the picture on Uncle Albert’s doorstep.

Uncle Fred’s house was built on Pope Road = Sherbrooke Road, up from the corner with St Eleanor’s Store. He lived near the Hunts.

- 1951 died of “Corony Occlusion” - heart attack, at home in Duncan, BC - he had lived in Duncan, BC for 5 years. Informant on death certificate was nephew D. R. Andrew [Dean] of Garden Street, Duncan, BC.

- RESIDENCE: lived in Sherbrooke as a girl (2 miles from St. Eleanors) where father had a small acreage and a market garden. Family then bought a big 2 storey house in St. Eleanors. After marriage lived on farm in N. St. Eleanors (~100 acres), then in house in St. Eleanors. Moved to Duncan, BC area in approx. 1950 (see group picture, Christmas 1950 in Duncan BC) - Harry and most of her family and already left, while she had stayed behind to nurse ailing parents. Her own health problems, she left PEI before her parents death in 1951 (likely in 1950).
Resided in the Duncan BC area for the rest if her life, first in a house on Herd Road which she really liked, particularly the large veranda. I don’t think the family was there very long, needing to move closer into town to be closer to work (at the dairy?). Their next house was at 5784 Garden Street in Duncan, backing on the lane along side the lumberyard and near the train tracks. Later in life she lived with her daughter Harriet, also living at the time on Garden Street. She lived for several years at the Cowichan Lodge on Tzouhalem Road, Duncan.

- WORK: Nurse - no formal training, nursed parents and relatives in the community. Trained as a dress maker, but didn’t like it (she was too “particular” and always got behind on the finishing work).

- HEALTH: had heart trouble in late 1940s due to stress of looking after parents and being separated from husband and family. Went on low salt diet for high blood pressure. Ruptured appendix about 1972. 1st cataract operation June 7, 1976, Victoria General hospital. 2nd operation for cataract Sept 27, 1976. Home from hospital Oct2/76. Surgery on left knee May 8, 1981. May 4, 1983 had marrow biopsy - mild type of bone cancer. May 17, 1983 scan of liver and bowel showed lots of gall stones. Infected appendix scar Jan, 1984 due to black thread still in place.
