- 9-5-1918 news item in the Advocate:
“Autoist Killed. Darwin D Loney, aged 27 years, of Danville, was instantly killed and Mitchell Sellers and wife of Utica[?] were slightly injured when a car driven by Mrs. Sellers skidded and was thrown down an embankment near Granville Thursday afternoon of last week.”
- 9-5-1918 news item in the Democrat:
“Darwin Loney, Instantly Killed in Auto Accident Llast Thursday. Darwin Loney, one of the most promising young business men in Knox county, was instantly killed at 10 o’clock last Thursday morning near Granville, when the auto in which he was riding skidded and turned over. The machine was being driven by Mrs. C. H. Sellers, who was learning to operate it. Darwin Loney was in the front seat, acting as instructor for Mrs. Sellers. The party was composed of Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Sellers, Darwin Loney, Larry Loney and Miss Burdetta Gaines. They were enroute to Columbus to attend the state fair. Mrs. Sellers was seriously injured, but the other members of the party escaped with a few minor bruises. Mrs. Sellers lost control of the machine while going down a small hill, it skidded, turned over and landed right side up, on its wheels. The machine was a new one, having been purchased by Dr. Sellers from Darwin Loney. After the accident the party returned to Newark in the fatal machine with the exception of Mrs. Sellers, who remained at a farm residence near the scene of the accident.”

-  I had heard that Harry (misspelled Larry in the article) broke his arm in the crash and was relieved of responsibility to report to the Army draft - given that WWI was on then, who knows how that might have turned out. . . Anyhow, Darwin's mother, Effie, was also reportedly deeply and inconsolably sorrowed at his loss.
