In 1893 he moved with his parents to California, U.S.A. During their married life Amy and Ernest lived in Nevada and Utah before moving to Oxnard, California where he joined his father in a hardware business. After his father's retirement in 1917, Ernest carried on the business until 1938. Thereafter he had a real estate and insurance business. At a time when travelling was less common than at present, he and Amy were fond of travelling. They had visited most major cities in U.S. and Canada. In 1972 they motored through Mexico and visited most of the cities in that country. In Acapulco, Mexico he caught a 9' 5" sailfish. Amy had a collection of 300 miniature pitchers as souvenirs of the places they visited. As of 1953 they were living in Oxnard, California.
