Grandma was a great horse woman, and so was my mother [Nell], she used to ride side-saddle in Horse Shows when she was young in the town of Summerside, 2 miles to the south. Grandma’s father was George Compton, and [her mother was Eliza Pring Compton, whose grand-] father was Col. Harry Compton who had served his King and Country well and the reigning King at that time reward him by giving him a grant of land in PEI, a lot of land I’ve been told, which he shared with family and friends, and where a large number of Compton’s lived for a lot of years, there are very few of them, if any still living around there. They probably moved away to greener pastures.... “

- Ella had a stroke when she was 76, and was bed ridden for 15 years before death at age 91 in 1951, just 2 weeks before her husband Sydney. At least part of her care was provided by her daughter Nell until Nell left PEI to join her family in BC. Later, [Gertrude (Mills) Compton] looked after Ella for two [?] years, while she was bed ridden.

The death occurred on Saturday morning, November 2, 1946, in the Prince Edward Island Hospital of Ann M Haszard widow of the late Louis A. Haszard.
Born on November 1, 1865, Mrs. Haszard was the daughter of the late George and Eliza Compton of St. Eleanors, P.E.I.
She was one of the early graduates of the Nursing School of the Prince Edward Island Hospital, beginning her training in the first hospital and completing it in the then new building on Kensington road.
As a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church she gave much of her time and means to church work and was alsways a faithful attendant at church services.
She leaves to mourn one daughter Louise in Women’s Institute work in this province also two sisters and one brother - Mrs. A. E. Morrison of Charlottetown with whom she reside since her husband’s death in April of this year, Mrs. Sydney Richardson and Mr. Leopold Compton both of St. Eleanors.”

- NAME: sometimes gave a middle name "Melbourne", which may have been made up by his wife who thought it was more prestigious to have a middle name. Was later nicknamed “Cheesy” due to his occupation.

- Family stories: As a boy in Norfolk, he attended church at Norwich Cathedral, and later would tell his grandchildren that he had to walk “10 long miles each way every Sunday morning”, whereas the grandchildren only had a two mile walk each way to the church in St. Eleanors, PEI. Sydney has 7 brothers [should read siblings], but they or he never kept in touch.

- From family stories: Moved from England to Ontario Canada in 1880 [1881 or 1882*] as a teenager, he learned the cheese-making business there before moving to PEI in 1882 [probably 1883 **]. He bought his house in St. Eleanor's from Jacob Howatt. The house was then situated on the south-east corner of the school playgrounds - it has now been moved to Glenn Drive.
[Sydney probably joined other Richardson relatives who had previously immigrated to Ontario, perhaps as early as the 1850s, and some had taken up the cheese making trade. - Sydney was a cheese-maker and started the first Cheese Factory in PEI on Lot 16 Road near North Drive in St Eleanors. Sydney gained the knickname of “Cheesy”
As published in “Sketches of Old St Eleanors”: “The first cheese factory in PEI was built in St Eleanors on the Lot 16 Road near Walter Arsenault’s, North Drive. The cheese-make Sydney Richardson was born in Norfolk, England, 1862. He came to Canada in 1880*, learning the cheese making business in Ontario, coming to PEI in 1882** became the first cheesemaker on the Island. Mr. Richardson married Isabella Compton of St. Eleanors, lived in St Eleanors until his death in 1951. His house was situated on the south east corner of the school playgrounds. (A Jacob Howatt lived in this house before Sydney R.). It was moved and now [1973] is located on Glenn Dr.”
- * When trying to substantiate Sydney's immigration, I found him still in England in 1881, living with his parents in Weston Longville, Norfolk. The most promising passenger list I've found contained the following entry on ancestry.com:
"Sydney Richards Male [age:] 17 [Date of Arrival:] 21 Aug 1882 [vessel:] Thames [port(s) of arrival:] Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal, Quebec [departed from:] London, England [Roll:] C-4532 - film says destined for Montreal."
- ** 1883 Feb 27 - Charles Andrew, on behalf of the St Eleanors Farmers Club, sent a letter to Samuel Wood at Newtonville, Ontario. In the letter to Mr. Wood, Mr. Andrew asks that he (Samuel) take the letter about the cheese factory to “some factory that you know”. The letter was fowarded to John Waddell in Orono, Ontario, who replied. [This is likely what prompted Sydney to move to PEI, but I’ve been unable to find out further details beyond what was in this letter. Note that the Charles Andrew was the ancestor of Harry Charles Andrew who later married Sydney’s youngest daughter Eleanor.]
- From the PEI archives fond Acc4369 “St. Eleanor's Cheese Manufacturing Company fonds”:
“St. Eleanor's boasted one of the earliest cheese factories on Prince Edward Island. Unfortunately there is little documentation of this enterprise. The company was established by statute in 1883 (Cap. 21) and the factory was built on the Lot 16 Road. The first cheese-maker at St. Eleanor's was Sydney Richardson who received a bronze medal in 1886 for the best exhibit of cheese in the British Empire. The factory was still in operation in 1903 according to an entry in the report of the Dairy Association for that year.”
-1886 Sydney received a bronze medal for the best exhibit of his cheese in the British Empire cheese competition - from “A Historic View of St. Eleanor’s 1747-1995”. “In 1886 he received a bronze medal for the best exhibit of his cheese in the British Empire. This medal, now [1973] in Edwin Bernard’s possession, shows taht Edward Albert, Prince of Wales, was president of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, England. The old cheese dry house is now [1973] on the farm of Ralph Riley used as a machine shop. Hogs were kept in an enclosure at the back of the factory to feed on the surplus whey.”

Laid to Rest - The funeral of the late Thos. Andrew took place from his late home Monday afternoon and was largely attended. A short service was held at the home in St. Eleanor's after which services were held in the Baptist Church and were conducted by Rev. A. K. Herman, who spoke from John 11-28, "The Master is come and calleth for thee". Two favorite hymns. "Abide with me" and "Forever with the Lord", were sung and Mr. George Bowness sang a solo, "Face to Face". Burial was made in Peoples Cemetery. The Honorable pall bearers were: Sydney Richardson, Albert Tanton, Benjamin Tanton, Geo. McGougan, George Jelly and James Harris. The active ball bearers were Austin Scales, Walter Lefurgy, Horace Andrew, Raymond Andrew, Harry Andrew and Richard Hunt."

“Of the 32 cheese-makers engaged on the Island last year, twelve were Ontario men, as folows:- Hazelbrook, Joseph Bur;gess; Baram’s Village, W. J. Stevens; New Glasgow, J. W. Hesseltine; Marshfiled, W. T. Leslie; Stanley, James Bristoow; Orwell, B.F. Dingman; Vernon River, S. T. Wallace; Kensington, Albert Raby; Cornwall, C. J. Brown; St. Eleanor’s, Sydney Richardson; Montague, E. L. Head; Hillsboro, Fraser Morrow. Most of these mentioned have spent two, three or four years in their present positions. Mr. Richardson has been at St. Eleanor’s for 15 years. - From his granddaughter Harriet Anddrew: Sydney was quite the cook. He loved to fish and hunt rabbits and wild birds. Many the bird, wild duck or goose that he gave to his daughter Nell’s family when the children were young had to not only be plucked etc. but when they ate the bird they had to watch out for buck shot, as those hunters were really generous with their ammunition! His granddaughter remembers being invited to stay for lunch one time and the stew bubbling away on the stove smelled delicious, like chicken in fact. They enjoyed it immensely and after lunch Sydney got a big kick out of watching their faces when he hold them that it had been RABBIT stew!
- Memories of Joyce (Mills) Rutherford:
“Sidney Richardson used to live by the school house and [gave] me shit when I was a kid and getting into trouble. We used to tease him when he was an old man, we would jump his fence to get the ball when we were kids and he would chase us off.
“The house he used to live in on what's now known as "south drive" has been relocated... by my Aunt Angie Bulger. It's now on Glen Drive in Summerside... we can send you a picture of the house if you like... … his house was next to St Eleanor's school. The house Angie Bulger (Costain) moved was Cheesy's and they moved it in the 60's or 70's”
The lady we know as Aunt "Ella" was bedridden when I was a child and we used to get dressed up nice and do our hair so we could go visit her. She was grandpa's sister and just a tiny little thing and we didn't understand....
Lillas Costain [step mother to Joyce (Mills) Rutledge] was the one who insisted they visit Leopold and his sister [Ella (Compton) Richardson] who had the stroke. They were so little they were afaid of her because she couldn't get out of bed.

- From family stories: Moved from England to Ontario Canada in 1880 [1881 or 1882*] as a teenager, he learned the cheese-making business there before moving to PEI in 1882 [probably 1883 **]. He bought his house in St. Eleanor's from Jacob Howatt. The house was then situated on the south-east corner of the school playgrounds - it has now been moved to Glenn Drive.
[Sydney probably joined other Richardson relatives who had previously immigrated to Ontario, perhaps as early as the 1850s, and some had taken up the cheese making trade. - Sydney was a cheese-maker and started the first Cheese Factory in PEI on Lot 16 Road near North Drive in St Eleanors. Sydney gained the knickname of “Cheesy”
As published in “Sketches of Old St Eleanors”: “The first cheese factory in PEI was built in St Eleanors on the Lot 16 Road near Walter Arsenault’s, North Drive. The cheese-make Sydney Richardson was born in Norfolk, England, 1862. He came to Canada in 1880*, learning the cheese making business in Ontario, coming to PEI in 1882** became the first cheesemaker on the Island. Mr. Richardson married Isabella Compton of St. Eleanors, lived in St Eleanors until his death in 1951. His house was situated on the south east corner of the school playgrounds. (A Jacob Howatt lived in this house before Sydney R.). It was moved and now [1973] is located on Glenn Dr.”
- * When trying to substantiate Sydney's immigration, I found him still in England in 1881, living with his parents in Weston Longville, Norfolk. The most promising passenger list I've found contained the following entry on ancestry.com:
"Sydney Richards Male [age:] 17 [Date of Arrival:] 21 Aug 1882 [vessel:] Thames [port(s) of arrival:] Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal, Quebec [departed from:] London, England [Roll:] C-4532 - film says destined for Montreal."
- ** 1883 Feb 27 - Charles Andrew, on behalf of the St Eleanors Farmers Club, sent a letter to Samuel Wood at Newtonville, Ontario. In the letter to Mr. Wood, Mr. Andrew asks that he (Samuel) take the letter about the cheese factory to “some factory that you know”. The letter was fowarded to John Waddell in Orono, Ontario, who replied. [This is likely what prompted Sydney to move to PEI, but I’ve been unable to find out further details beyond what was in this letter. Note that the Charles Andrew was the ancestor of Harry Charles Andrew who later married Sydney’s youngest daughter Eleanor.]
- From the PEI archives fond Acc4369 “St. Eleanor's Cheese Manufacturing Company fonds”:
“St. Eleanor's boasted one of the earliest cheese factories on Prince Edward Island. Unfortunately there is little documentation of this enterprise. The company was established by statute in 1883 (Cap. 21) and the factory was built on the Lot 16 Road. The first cheese-maker at St. Eleanor's was Sydney Richardson who received a bronze medal in 1886 for the best exhibit of cheese in the British Empire. The factory was still in operation in 1903 according to an entry in the report of the Dairy Association for that year.”
-1886 Sydney received a bronze medal for the best exhibit of his cheese in the British Empire cheese competition - from “A Historic View of St. Eleanor’s 1747-1995”. “In 1886 he received a bronze medal for the best exhibit of his cheese in the British Empire. This medal, now [1973] in Edwin Bernard’s possession, shows taht Edward Albert, Prince of Wales, was president of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, England. The old cheese dry house is now [1973] on the farm of Ralph Riley used as a machine shop. Hogs were kept in an enclosure at the back of the factory to feed on the surplus whey.”

Laid to Rest - The funeral of the late Thos. Andrew took place from his late home Monday afternoon and was largely attended. A short service was held at the home in St. Eleanor's after which services were held in the Baptist Church and were conducted by Rev. A. K. Herman, who spoke from John 11-28, "The Master is come and calleth for thee". Two favorite hymns. "Abide with me" and "Forever with the Lord", were sung and Mr. George Bowness sang a solo, "Face to Face". Burial was made in Peoples Cemetery. The Honorable pall bearers were: Sydney Richardson, Albert Tanton, Benjamin Tanton, Geo. McGougan, George Jelly and James Harris. The active ball bearers were Austin Scales, Walter Lefurgy, Horace Andrew, Raymond Andrew, Harry Andrew and Richard Hunt."

- From his granddaughter Harriet Anddrew: Sydney was quite the cook. He loved to fish and hunt rabbits and wild birds. Many the bird, wild duck or goose that he gave to his daughter Nell’s family when the children were young had to not only be plucked etc. but when they ate the bird they had to watch out for buck shot, as those hunters were really generous with their ammunition! His granddaughter remembers being invited to stay for lunch one time and the stew bubbling away on the stove smelled delicious, like chicken in fact. They enjoyed it immensely and after lunch Sydney got a big kick out of watching their faces when he hold them that it had been RABBIT stew!

“Sidney Richardson used to live by the school house and [gave] me shit when I was a kid and getting into trouble. We used to tease him when he was an old man, we would jump his fence to get the ball when we were kids and he would chase us off.
“The house he used to live in on what's now known as "south drive" has been relocated... by my Aunt Angie Bulger. It's now on Glen Drive in Summerside... we can send you a picture of the house if you like... … his house was next to St Eleanor's school. The house Angie Bulger (Costain) moved was Cheesy's and they moved it in the 60's or 70's”
The lady we know as Aunt "Ella" was bedridden when I was a child and we used to get dressed up nice and do our hair so we could go visit her. She was grandpa's sister and just a tiny little thing and we didn't understand....
Lillas Costain [step mother to Joyce (Mills) Rutledge] was the one who insisted they visit Leopold and his sister [Ella (Compton) Richardson] who had the stroke. They were so little they were afaid of her because she couldn't get out of bed.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sisters: Mrs. Sydney Richardson, St. Eleanors; Mrs. Louis A. Haszard and Mrs. A. E. Morrison of Charlottetown; and three brothers: Fred and Leopold of St. Eleanors and Clifton in Wetaskiwin, Alta. The funeral takes place from the home at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) to St. John's Church, St. Eleanors, service beginning at 2:30 p.m. Interment in the adjoing cemetery.

Many friends will learn with a deep sense of regret of the death last night of Mrs. Henry Compton of St. Eleanors after a month's illness. She leaves to cherish her memory three sisters: Mrs. Sydney Richardson, St. Eleanors; Mrs. Louis A. Haszard and Mrs. A. E. Morrison of Charlottetown; and three brothers: Fred and Leopold of St. Eleanors and Clifton in Wetaskiwin, Alta. The funeral takes place from the home at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) to St. John's Church, St. Eleanors, service beginning at 2:30 p.m. Interment in the adjoing cemetery.

“MR. FREDERICK GEORGE COMPTON
“The passing of Mr. Frederick Compton whose death occurred at his home in St. Eleanors on March 21st has cast a gloom over the whole community where he was so well and favorably known.
“The late Mr. Compton was born at St. Eleanors sixty-two years ago. He belonged to one of the oldest and most highly respected families in the province. He was the third eldest son of the late George Compton and a grandson of Major Thomas Compton who was the founder of St. Eleanor’s district and who by his efforts, did so much for the improvement and development of St. Eleanors in its early days.
“With the exception of a few years spent in the United States, when a a young man, the late Mr. Compton spent all his life in ST. Eleanors. He was lame from a small boy but he bore his affliction without murmuring and worked on his farm to the best of his ability. Failing health and financial difficulties caused him to abaondon the farm, and come to live in the village of St. Eleanors. Feeling crushed, his eyesight failing, his health gone, the burden of life was too heavy for his weakened frame, and his sensitive spirit took its flight. Fred as he was better known, was one of nature’s noblemen. His hospitality was know far and wide. A good neighbor, a kind husband and father, and in sickness or trouble he was always ready with an extended hand to help both rich and poor. His host of friends mourn the passing of one of their best and most worthy friends. It was his lot to pass through the deep waters of affliction but we are told by a sacred writer that those that come out of great tribulation shall be arrayed in white robes and serve before the Throne, and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them and wipe away all tears from their eyes. These are comforting words for the bereaved ones. For with the rod of chastisement goes the precious promise of the father’s love.

On the 24th of March a large crowd of sorrowing friends gathered at the home to pay their last respects to a departed friend and neighbor. I couldn't find the family on the 1881.

“Mrs. L. A. Haszard
The death occurred on Saturday morning, November 2, 1946, in the Prince Edward Island Hospital of Ann M Haszard widow of the late Louis A. Haszard.
Born on November 1, 1865, Mrs. Haszard was the daughter of the late George and Eliza Compton of St. Eleanors, P.E.I.
She was one of the early graduates of the Nursing School of the Prince Edward Island Hospital, beginning her training in the first hospital and completing it in the then new building on Kensington road.
As a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church she gave much of her time and means to church work and was alsways a faithful attendant at church services.
She leaves to mourn one daughter Louise in Women’s Institute work in this province also two sisters and one brother - Mrs. A. E. Morrison of Charlottetown with whom she reside since her husband’s death in April of this year, Mrs. Sydney Richardson and Mr. Leopold Compton both of St. Eleanors.”
