259. Katherine COMPTON (William Henry*11, Albert Harry*10, Thomas Compton9, Charlotte Lisle NEWMAN8, Joanna WHITAKER7, Jeremiah6, Jeremiah5, Margaret LISLE4, John3, William2, Anthony1). Born aft 1891. Katherine died bef 1935; she was 44.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- family heresay - this Katherine could have been Kate’s niece, eldest child of her baby brother Leopold.
Claudia’s query: I have your grandmother listed as Catherine Viola Mildred “Kathy” Compton, 1910-1935 (who married Fred Mills, and was the daughter of Leopold Compton and Catherine MIldred "Katie" Clark - this is another Katie possibility!) It is true I have your grandmother's exact birth an death dates, but I have her known as "Kathy", not "Katie" - do I have it wrong? The other "Katie" I was thinking of was Viola Catherine “Kate” Compton, 1863-1935, who was Leopold's older sister, and therefore your grandmother's aunt. This "Kate" married a Compton cousin (William Henry* Compton, 1859-1919), and I believe they adopted/raised a daughter Katherine who died before she did (bef 1935). I vaguely remember a rumour that this younger Katherine might have been their niece, but I'm not even sure this was in relation to this family, if true at all. This area of the tree is quite muddled, with the names being very similar and the date 1935 cropping up a lot. Perhaps I have errors? If you and your Mom can shed any more light on this, I'd appreciate it!
Reply:I think you have it right, the adopted niece would be my grandmother and they both died around the same time.

- But why would Leopold give up his first-born to his older sister?
