RESEARCH NOTES
- interconnecting families here.
- Birth (General Baptist Congregation in Headcorn, Kent)
[parents] James Carpenter and Mercy Boorman was[sic] married at Staplehurst May 13 1777.
Mercy Carpenter daughter of James and Mercy Carpenter his wife born March 11 1778 at Frittenden; Charlotte born Sept 8 1779
- one source lists 8 children for Mercy: William, John, Edmund, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Mercy, Mary Ann and Eliza [but if Mercy died young, these are all likely the children of William Crouch’s second wife]
- another source references 9 children including a Sarah Osborne? Crouch. Also has Mercy dying in 1802 and husband remarrying a Mary, who would be the mother of alll or most of his children I wonder if Mercy and Mary were the same person? Need to validate Mercy’s date of death if possible
- from another researcher: I too haven't found Mercy Carpenter's death. [now found in Staplehurst in 1802] … I believe Mercy and Mary are two people.  Mary's surname could be Simmon(d)s but I haven't proved it.  - there is also a Thos. Crouch, son of William and Mary, baptised 20 Aug 1813, Ebenezer-independent, Sutton Valence, Kent
- from another researcher: I have also found a note of a Mercy Crouch born about 1802 Headcorn, a baptism 17 Jul 1803 Headcorn, again with familysearch. No parents named but dates fit in with William and Mercy Crouch if she died in childbirth or afterwards.
 ref 100917-9, England-ODM, source film number 1751915.

On 28 Nov 1797 when Mercy was 19, she married William CROUCH in Staplehurst, Kent, England. Born ca 1775. William died abt 1845; he was 70.

RESEARCH NOTES
From another researcher:
- did he marry twice? If Mercy died young in 1802, his 2nd wife Mary may have been the mother of his children?

- I believe  William Crouch and Mary married 1804 Maidstone. In 1841 census William is living with Edmund b.1819 and Eliza b.1823, presumably the rest have moved on.

- 1804 possible second wife for William Crouch - record is found on www.thegenealogist.co.uk:
Groom: William Crouch
Bride: Mary Simmonds
Date: 23 April 1804
Witness 1: John Knowlden (this is the interesting bit of info, family already connected with the Knowledens)
Witness 2: John File
Parish: Maidstone
Church: All Saints
County: Kent
Event: Marriage
FamilySearch.org has the same entry without witness info and gives it reference number

The dates certainly fit in with Charlotte Crouch being born 27.1.1805 nine months later.  She appears to be the first child of Mary, several more follow with dates of baptisms, often a while after birth, but haven't established exactly which ones survived.

- 1845: William Crouch's will was proved 4/4/1845, he names sons William and John Crouch as executors together with son-in-law John Boorman, husband of his daughter Charlotte.  He mentions his late father William Crouch. Edmund gets £20 per anum for life providing he does not charge or mortgage the annuity in which case it would be forfeited !!  I think he may have been 'unreliable' in some way!   He names seven more children William, Charlotte, Betsy wife of Benjamin Boorman, Mercy the wife of Thomas Usborne, John, Mary Ann and Eliza so these presumably are the surviving children plus Edmund (8 children).  He made the will in 1833 and adds husband John H?ickman for Mary Ann and William Munns for Eliza.
Sarah Osborne is John Boorman's second marriage, name of Osborne is not proved but Sarah and John lived out their old age together according to censuses, Charlotte died young, aged 51.

- baptism records don’t always list parents names. There seems to be another couple (Thomas and Sarah Crouch) who were having children about the same time in Headcorn, including a Mary baptised 14 Feb 1802).
Baptisms in Headcorn (batch I01573-1) without parents names:
Stephen Crouch, 11 Oct 1811
Mercy Crouch, 17 Jul 1803
Charles Crouch, 12 Jun 1809
Charles Crouch, 17 Nov 1809
Edmund Crouch, 23 Feb 1808
James Crouch, 11 Mar 1806
Anna Crouch, 14 Jan 1805

- baptisms for children of William and Mary Crouch are listed nearby in Sutton Valence Kent (a couple of miles north of Headcorn on the road to Headcorn from Maidstone) at an independent church, as many Boormans were often affiliated.
69. Charlotte CARPENTER (Mercy BOORMAN5, William4, William3, Thomas2, William1). Born on 8 Sep 1779 in Frittenden, Kent, England. Christened in Headcorn Baptist Church, Headcorn, Kent, England. Religion: Baptist.

- Birth (General Baptist Congregation in Headcorn, Kent)
daughter of James and Mercy Carpenter his wife; Charlotte born Sept 8 1779
Charlotte married KNOWLEDEN.

RESEARCH NOTES
- the 4 children listed by another researcher (Caroline, Henry, Esther Ann, and George Edward - 3 of these probably came from 1841 census) - do not seem a good match for this couple who were married in 1809. These children were born 1821 - 1828, and their mother’s maiden name was listed as Worsley (not Heath).

- another researcher on rootsweb lists 1 child: Mercry Sabina Carpenter, 1812 Staplehurst, although I found christening occurring in 1834 in Halden Kent according to:
"England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975"

[wikipedia says: High Halden is a village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent, England [just east of Biddenden]. The village is located on the A28 road between Ashford town and Tenterden, 3miles north of the latter. [Biddenden is south of Headcorn; Headcorn is east of Staplehurst] - so High Halden is probably about 20+ km SE of Staplehurst by road.]

>> 1841 census in High Halden lists a number of children for James and Elizabeth (Nelson, Caroline, Esther, George) - some names from both groups, so does this mean it's a mixed family?

- why is his death listed as after 1861? Perhaps because of this census (but is this him? - age and location of birth is right):

RESEARCH NOTES
- from another researcher:
A Sophia Boorman (1788-1875), married to William Carpenter, arrived on the Quebec from England on 18 May 1840 with William and their 11 children, and also went to Sherman NY.  A Find-a-Grave posting of William Carpenter’s will lists the above Benjamin Boorman as William’s brother-in-law – and thus Sophia Boorman Carpenter is Benjamin’s brother.  They could be siblings of Rachel, but the discrepancy about Benjamin Boorman’s parents makes this questionable.
On 7 Feb 1811 when William was 26, he married Sophia BOORMAN (96) , daughter of James BOORMAN (36) & Mary WOOD, in East Sutton, Kent, England. Born on 3 Mar 1788 in Ulcombe, Kent, England. Sophia died in Sherman, Chautauqua County, New York, USA, in 1875; she was 86. Buried abt 1875 in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Sherman, Chautauqua County, New York, USA.
