- 1892 memorial for William Denman
Birth: Aug. 10, 1822 Florence, Erie County, Ohio, USA
Death: Dec. 12, 1892 Wakeman, Huron County, Ohio, USA

William's father was John Denman # 135525868, who was born on March 26, 1791 in Hythe, Kent, England to William Denman (November 10, 1763 Ditchling, Sussex, England - December 10, 1858 Neversink, New York # 52033290 ) and Anna Boorman (August 9, 1772 Staplehurst, Kent, England - June 5, 1842 Neversink, New York # 52033304 ). William and Anna were married on June 24, 1790 in Headcorn, England. John came to America with his parents and family when he was 4 years old, landing in New York then eventually making his way to Florence, Ohio, where he died on March 23, 1878. John was a farmer.

His mother was Marinda Blackman # 135525825, who was born on May 16, 1803 in Niagara County, New York to Captain William Blackman (1775, Partridgefield, Massachusetts - May 9, 1855 Florence, Ohio # 135073474 ) and Philenda Curtis (January 23, 1785 Niagara County, New York - September 23, 1850 Florence, Ohio). The Captain and Philenda were married in 1798 in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Marinda and John were married on September 30, 1819 in Huron County, Ohio. Marinda died in Florence, Ohio on March 24, 1887.

William was married twice. His first wife was Cordelia Hough, born in 1830/1 in Clarksfield, Ohio to John Hough (1800/1 Pennsylvania - March 13, 1872 Oberlin, Ohio # 47837709 ) and John's second wife, Ruth Emily Hill (March 7, 1805 Connecticut - March 16, 1872 Oberlin, Ohio # 47837740 ). John's first wife was Rebecca Trowbridge, step-daughter of Benjamin Stiles from whom John learned the trade of saddle-tree and hame-maker. Rebecca died in 1827 at the age of 23. She left behind 3 children, 2 of whom died young. Her 3rd child, Charles, married Miss Sanford of Fitchville, went to California in 1852 and died soon after he arrived there.

John Hough and Ruth Emily Hill were married on August 17, 1828 in Huron County, Ohio by Alfred H Betts. Their daughter Cordelia married William on September 8, 1853 in Huron County, that marriage performed by Rev S. Johnson. After Cordelia died on August 14, 1868 leaving William with two young children to raise, William married Julia Christian Partello on January 28, 1869.

Julia was born on October 26, 1847 in Clinton County, Michigan to Welcome Phineas Partello (October 22, 1818 Cazenovia, New York - August 5, 1895 St. Louis, Michigan # 93194279 ) and Amelia Jane Hoople (November 28, 1821 Ontario, Canada - September 26, 1906 Bethany, Michigan). Julia died in Norwalk, Ohio, on April 18, 1930 and was buried in the Birmingham Cemetery, Birmingham, Ohio.

William and Cordelia had 3 children:
Ellen Ann (Ella) born on Feb 21, 1856, died very young when she drowned in a cistern in 1858.
William F July 16, 1858, died when he fell from a horse on Aug 28, 1891 in Pueblo, Colorado.
Nellie Cordelia born on March 6, 1861 and lived a full life, dying in 1938 in Colorado.

William and Julia had 3 children as well:
Julia A was born on December 22, 1871 and lived until 1950.
Lester C was born on September 20, 1873.
Fred Lee was born on December 31, 1881.

RESEARCH NOTES
- One researcher says he died in 3 Apr 1940 at age 110 - probable typo, but what is the correct year? One might guess 1840 (as several trees on ancestry state), but this can’t be right as he was living with parents in 1860 at age 30. Perhaps he died in1904?

- 1850: NOT listed in parents household

- 1855: Ohio county marriages (1789-1997) shows license granted to Charles Denman and Elizabeth Foster, November 12, 1855 by David Hooper. Page 350, No. 694. But there is no marriage date listed (as there was for all others on this image) so perhaps the marriage didn’t occur?.

- 1869: Ancestral File (familysearch) private submission (rebentley585407) lists wife as Melissa Van Auker b 1834 Florence Huron Ohio, married 10 Sep 1869 [no vital record found to support this]

- 1834 - At the time of his birth Florence Township was actually in Huron county - Erie county was not established until March 15, 1838 (see Huron County Kinologist, vol 21, no 3).

- F.A.’s Denman grandparents and his Groatt grandmother all outlived his mother, Mary Groatt Denman, who died at age 35 when F.A. was not-yet 5 years old. F.A. had two older sisters and an older brother (4 to 9 years older than he was). His father John remarried two years after the death of his first wife, presumably needing help with the 4 children. The story is that John knew of a young woman who had lived in Wakeman but had moved to Michigan to teach. He took the 4 children up to Michigan to meet her and then married her.

- 1870 USA census, Missouri, living with Ambrose and May Denman:
George Denman M 26y Ohio - farmer [no relationships given, born about 1844] - this is likely the source of the “brother George” theory, but if the ages are right there isn’t a big enough gap between other siblings for this to be feasible unless one is a twin - brother Leverett B was born 8 Mar 1845 and brother Martin on 8 Oct 1843. Perhaps George is cousin not yet discovered?
