If William did fight in the Napoleonic wars then he survived. At the Kent Quarter Sessions of 1790, a William BOORMAN, Wheelwright, of Headcorn faced a bastardy hearing regarding the child of Eleanor HOSMER a single woman. Was it this William or his father? (1790 hearing 138). If it were William Jnr then it doesn't seem to have affected his inheritance.

“June 24 William Denman of the parish of Hythe Batchelor and Ann boorman of this parish Spinster were married in this church by Licence.”

- About 1795 they went to America, for [baby] Elizabeth died in New York in 1795
- 1819 in fathers will: He bequeaths to his daughter Ann, wife of William Denman, now in North America, 30 pounds sterling and one-sixth of his goods.

“In 1795 Willliam and Ann Denman came to the Neversink Country from Ditchling, Sussex County, England, and settled on the hill now called Denman Mt. on 200 acres purchased sight unseen from James Debrosses. Mr Denman built a lean-to for shelter in the fall of 1795. He carved lettering into a rock showing the date of his settlement. Present day residents have seen this carving. Life was difficult in this remote area. Although the threat from Indeans was gone, the area was inhabited by panthers, wolves, and other wild animals. Farming and hunting provided for the family.... In spite of all hardships, the Denmans survived and prospered. Mr Denman replaced their one room log home with a two story plank house and he and his wife, Ann, raised and educated ten children in their new home so far from England.”

- regarding marriage: “A search on Ancestry shows two sources of extracted parish records which list William Denman of Hythe, bachelor, and Ann Boorman of Headcorn, minor, father William Boorman, 23 Jun 1790 at Headcorn. Since these are extracted records of Canterbury licences I suspect that this is the licence (meaning there should also be an allegation and a bond somewhere in the parish). Also if the licence was issued 23 Jun then the marriage could well have taken place on 24 Jun, the next day. [The] image of a page obtained from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City shows that marriage recorded in a copy of the Register of the parish of Headcorn from Lady Day 1790 to Lady Day 1791 [shows the marriage was held on June 24 1790].”

There he settled when he first came to America. He was a scholar, & a gentleman. I remember his quoting Shakespeare,Milton Young's, Night Thoughts, & many other works to me in my childhood." "He was a man of iron will, strong likes & dislikes." "He endured many privations as one of the first settlers of this country, but his iron constitution endured the mall well & at the age of 90 years he was hale & hearty; walking 4 miles to present me with his photograph, which I still have in a good state of preservation. - Son of Willliam Denman (died aft 1782) and Ann Marten. The pedigree goes back 3 further generations, all named William Denman.(from another researcher)
- From a book called “Denman Family History” published 1913 by Harris, pages 67-74 :
“Two brothers, William and John Denman, came from Sussex County, England, to America in 1795. They were descendants of William Denman of Newhall Grange, Brampton, in Cumberland, who is found on record in the latter part of the fourteenth century as possessing that Manor.
“William was born at Ditchley [Ditchling?], Sussex County, England, November 10, 1763, and died at Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY, December 10, 1858. He was married at Headcom [sic], County Kent, England, June 24, 1790 to Ann Boorman, who was born at Staplehurst, County Kent, August 9, 1772 and died at Neversink, NY, June 5, 1847. They had eleven children: John, William, Elizabeth, Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth the second, Jane, Martin, Ann, Henry, and Samuel. Of these the first three were born at Hythe, County Kent, in England, and all the others in Sullivan Co, New York….”
- Hythe Kent is apparently where William already was living when he and Ann Boorman married, and where they lived as a young family. So far no clues about how/why he got there from the Ditchling area or what he did there. I don't think there was a Baptist presence so he may have broken with the church? Their children John, Edward, and the first Elizabeth were all born in Hythe
“the French Revolution … (1789-1799) …may have been part of the young Denmans decision to migrate to the very new country that was America in 1795. … I have found no information so far that tells why William Denman moved to the coast from his Sussex farming town. This move took him away from his General Baptist church community. There is, so far, no documentation of any group moving to the Hythe area at that time and it was a close-knit community. That was presumably why William went back to it for his bride, traveling some distance to Headcorn to marry in 1790 having already settled in Hythe.”

The following was written by his granddaughter, Priscilla Denman Eller, "I can remember my grandfather; he lived with my father (Henry Denman)many years on the old Denman homestead in the town of Neversink. There he settled when he first came to America. He was a scholar, & a gentleman. I remember his quoting Shakespeare,Milton Young's, Night Thoughts, & many other works to me in my childhood." "He was a man of iron will, strong likes & dislikes." "He endured many privations as one of the first settlers of this country, but his iron constitution endured the mall well & at the age of 90 years he was hale & hearty; walking 4 miles to present me with his photograph, which I still have in a good state of preservation. - Son of Willliam Denman (died aft 1782) and Ann Marten. The pedigree goes back 3 further generations, all named William Denman.(from another researcher)
- From a book called “Denman Family History” published 1913 by Harris, pages 67-74 :
“Two brothers, William and John Denman, came from Sussex County, England, to America in 1795. They were descendants of William Denman of Newhall Grange, Brampton, in Cumberland, who is found on record in the latter part of the fourteenth century as possessing that Manor.
“William was born at Ditchley [Ditchling?], Sussex County, England, November 10, 1763, and died at Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY, December 10, 1858. He was married at Headcom [sic], County Kent, England, June 24, 1790 to Ann Boorman, who was born at Staplehurst, County Kent, August 9, 1772 and died at Neversink, NY, June 5, 1847. They had eleven children: John, William, Elizabeth, Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth the second, Jane, Martin, Ann, Henry, and Samuel. Of these the first three were born at Hythe, County Kent, in England, and all the others in Sullivan Co, New York….”
- Hythe Kent is apparently where William already was living when he and Ann Boorman married, and where they lived as a young family. So far no clues about how/why he got there from the Ditchling area or what he did there. I don't think there was a Baptist presence so he may have broken with the church? Their children John, Edward, and the first Elizabeth were all born in Hythe
“the French Revolution … (1789-1799) …may have been part of the young Denmans decision to migrate to the very new country that was America in 1795. … I have found no information so far that tells why William Denman moved to the coast from his Sussex farming town. This move took him away from his General Baptist church community. There is, so far, no documentation of any group moving to the Hythe area at that time and it was a close-knit community. That was presumably why William went back to it for his bride, traveling some distance to Headcorn to marry in 1790 having already settled in Hythe.”
[From wikpedia: “Hythe, is a small coastal market town on the edge of Romney Marsh, in the District of Shepway on the south coast of Kent. John Hicks is a different person [more distantly related] who was baptised at East Grinstead 12 May 1765, married Jane Martyr and died 17 Oct 1832. John & Jane are buried together in a very elaborate tomb at East Peckham, Kent. [see indexed records on familysearch.org - he was the son of William Boorman and Elizabeth Lynn]
- This John Boorman [son of William and Ann] was landlord of "The Crown" at Staplehurst and he keeled over and died one morning whilst pulling ale in January 1810, most likely from a stroke or heart attack.

So it would have been possible for John to have been part of that force and to have been repatriated with injuries from which he subsequently died. Thomas had two younger brothers, David and Edward, who died in 1843 and 1858 respectively. Apart from John who had died, all four of the surviving sons were beneficiaries in William Snr's Will.”

- Thomas was living in Southampton Street and that is where he died and was buried as BOREMAN 2 Aug 1845 St George's, Camberwell, aged 68 [see attached], so born c.1776/7, probably in Staplehurst, Kent, not Surrey as indicated above. I have only one marriage for him - to Ann CARPENTER 29 Jul 1801 All Saints, Maidstone, Kent.

[Southampton Street is currently a short 2 blocks long, perpendicular to The Strand, very near Covent Gardens to the WNW, and a bend in the river Thames and the Waterloo Bridce A301. Camberwll is to the SE, south of the Thmas on the A202 and south of Southwark]

- Version 1: suggests that Thomas was born 1780, died 1862, no locations, married to
a) Ann Bassett OR b) Ann Carpenter and Ann Bassett Old compilations state that Ann Bassett's sister married ???? Tamplin (farmer), whose daughter Ann Templin (Tamplin?) married William Seeley, whose son George Seeley married Louisa Boorman (relation of Thomas Boorman) in 1962/3 - this is likely not true?
Other researchers believe that Thomas married an Ann Carpenter, and not Ann Bassett. But the link to the Seeleys may still exist through the Boormans rather than the Bassetts. One researcher says that Thomas Boorman’s sister Susannah Boorman married a William Tamkin, and they had 3 children, including Ann Tamkin who married William Seeley (the parents of George Thomas Seeley who married Louisa Boorman, daughter of Thomas Boorman (1810) and Mary Ann Green. - quite a maze!
- Version 2: “Thomas was living in Southampton Street [Camberwell in 1841] and that is where he died and was buried as BOREMAN 2 Aug 1845 St George's, Camberwell, aged 68 [see attached burial record - record #1383, Abode: Southampton Street], so born c.1776/7, probably in Staplehurst, Kent, not Surrey as indicated above. I have only one marriage for him - to Ann CARPENTER 29 Jul 1801 All Saints, Maidstone, Kent.”
- “The only census in which Thomas appeared was that of 1841 when he was living in Camberwell, Surrey. In that he is shown as having been born in the county, i.e. Surrey. Now the 1841 Census is notoriously inaccurate and like all censuses is only as good as the information given by the householder and the quality of the enumerator. So Thomas may or may not have been born in Surrey. If he was born in Surrey then this is a possible baptism:-
15 Apr 1781 St Mary’s, Newington, Thomas S. of Thomas & Ann BORMAN
Thomas Henry bap. 10 Jul 1779 Newington of the same parents was bur. 25 Jun 1780 Newington but there was a replacement Thomas bap. 15 Apr 1781. Our Thomas was living in Southampton Street, St Giles, Camberwell in 1841 as a wheelwright. St Giles, Camberwell and St Mary's, Newington are neighbouring parishes. In the 1841 C Thomas is shown as born in county, i.e. in Surrey, so it is tempting to assume that he was the one bap. in 1781. However, his reported age at death in 1848 was 68. If that was correct then he would have been born 1776 or 1777. I think the fact that he was a wheelwright outweighs any conflicting evidence and so I would rule out the Thomas bap. 1781.”

Other researchers believe that Thomas married an Ann Carpenter, and not Ann Bassett. But the link to the Seeleys may still exist through the Boormans rather than the Bassetts. One researcher says that Thomas Boorman’s sister Susannah Boorman married a William Tamkin, and they had 3 children, including Ann Tamkin who married William Seeley (the parents of George Thomas Seeley who married Louisa Boorman, daughter of Thomas Boorman (1810) and Mary Ann Green. - quite a maze!

- “The only census in which Thomas appeared was that of 1841 when he was living in Camberwell, Surrey. In that he is shown as having been born in the county, i.e. Surrey. Now the 1841 Census is notoriously inaccurate and like all censuses is only as good as the information given by the householder and the quality of the enumerator. So Thomas may or may not have been born in Surrey. If he was born in Surrey then this is a possible baptism:-

Thomas Henry bap. 10 Jul 1779 Newington of the same parents was bur. 25 Jun 1780 Newington but there was a replacement Thomas bap. 15 Apr 1781. Our Thomas was living in Southampton Street, St Giles, Camberwell in 1841 as a wheelwright. St Giles, Camberwell and St Mary's, Newington are neighbouring parishes. In the 1841 C Thomas is shown as born in county, i.e. in Surrey, so it is tempting to assume that he was the one bap. in 1781. However, his reported age at death in 1848 was 68. If that was correct then he would have been born 1776 or 1777. I think the fact that he was a wheelwright outweighs any conflicting evidence and so I would rule out the Thomas bap. 1781.”
