COTTON, HON. GEORGE WITHE RAGE, of Adelaide, South Australia, member of the Legislative Council, b. at Slaplehurst, co. Kent, England, 4th February, 1821 ; arrived with his parents in South Australia, 7th March, 1849 ; m. first, 30th June, 1846. His first wife d. 29th April, 1849, and her

infant son shortly afterwards. He m. secondly, 22nd September, 1849 Elizabeth, daughter of William Mitchell, Esq., by Emma Morcom, his wife and by her has issue,

I. George Samuel, b. 22nd February, 1858 ; m. 15th July, 1880, Annie Wallace, of Adelaide, and has issue, Robert Harold and Alice Evelyn.
II. William Mitchell, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. London, b. 4th May, 1860; m. 26th June, 1888, Maud Pullein, of Camden Town, London,
iii. Edward Witherage, b. 1st March, 1870.
iv. Charles Henry, b. 23rd September, 1874.
i. Emma Morcom, m. 23rd June, 1875, William Bowen Chinner, Esq. of Adelaide, professor of music, but has no issue. [wrong generation if this is a marriage date]

Lineage:
Sir John Maclean's Parochial and Family History of the Deanery of Trigge Minor relates, that the founder of the family of Cotton, in the "West of England, migrated from the county of Chester in the 14th century. They, or some of them, lived for many years in Botreaux Castle> in the West of England, and it is believed that the present Hon. G. W. Cotton is descended from a younger branch of this family. -

Richard Cotton, Esq., son of Richard Cotton, Esq. of Lamerton, co. Devon, by Elizabeth, his wife, was baptised at North Lamerton, co. Devon, 20th April, 1746, and d. 6th June, 1799, having had by Mary, his wife (who d. 14th January, 1796), amongst other issue,
Samuel, of whom presently [his father].
Richard, found dead on the sea shore in the West of England.
James, in the service of the Excise, lived sometime in London and Canterbury.
Joseph, went to America.
Jane, m Willis, Esq.
Grace, m. 30th May, 1798, Thomas Cory, Esq., and had issue.

- Likely died due to the rigors of immigrating to Australia and perhaps complications during childbirth - her infant child also died shortly after arriving in Australia.
On 22 Sep 1849 when George Witherage was 28, he second married Elizabeth MITCHELL in Australia. Born ca 1821.
