Caleb died 3 Apr 1901, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.26 Notes on Caleb Southon #2341

He went to the USA as a young man (before 1841) and worked for his Uncle "Colgates" (?). He returned to England to marry his fiance (Mariah ?) in 1853. His wife died leaving him with a son (Caleb junior?). Caleb remarried in 1868 and taking his son (then aged about 12) with them emigrated to Canada in 1869/70. There the couple established a store and bar at an "outpost Station in Ontario, close to a logging site and a river. There they had five other children (four girls and a boy).
When the eldest son (Caleb junior?) grew up he fell into bad ways (drinking and gambling with his father's money) and Caleb sent him back to England (possibly Moat Farm in Headcorn, Kent). There Caleb junior married and fathered a son born before 1882.
The night that Vesta's mother Louisa was born in Sep 1882, the store was burned down and the family lost everything. They were taken in by Uncle "Colgate". Caleb, his wife and five children then moved on to Australia about 1884 to join other members of the family who had settled there.
(Vesta O'Vard letters of Apr 1997.)

Caleb was a lay Minister and is believed to have been a teacher before he left England.
(Vesta O'Vard letter of Apr 1999.)

Assumed that his son Caleb is assigned to first wife, since he is not listed on Vesta O'Vards worksheet.
