- 1875: Marr (2) reg Mar qtr 1875 at Newport M dist of Sarah Ann Dark to John HOPKINS (ref FreeBMD).
- Sarah did not move to Australia until after she married her second husband. [married John Hopkins 1875] Sarah Ann had another 4 [3?] children with her second husband after coming to Australia
- the British Index entry for the marriage of Sarah Ann Dark and John Hopkins is:
1st Q, 1875 Newport M., Glamorganshire, Wales, Vol. 11a, page 217.
- The family came straight [from UK] to Newcastle [NSW, Australia] via an unusual route - that of Queensland [Australia]. [Emigrated between 1876 and 1879, based on the kids' places of birth.] They dropped off the eldest girl to work as a house maid, first embarkation site. She was only about 15 years. However the brother went some time later and brought her back to Newcastle. The mother, Sarah Ann had remarried a Blacksmith [John Hopkins] after the death of her first husband [John Dark], Master Mariner in Wales. Maybe there was more work in Newcastle at that time. Another son, Samuel [Dark], a sailor, followed to Newcastle in the 1890’s and became very prosperous. Commencing an Ice Works which only ceased operation in the late 1970’s. Some family memebers did very nicely with shares. Surprisingly, a playhouse ran this year [2007] for a month, being in memory of “Sam Dark”. He had given very generously to WW1 efforts and gave to many other worthwhile ventures here in Newcastle. He didn’t live long either, dying in 1929 [1921?].

- 1907: Sarah's death reg 1907 at Wickham dist, NSW (NSW reg 16292).
- Buried in Baptist Section Sandgate with John and Fanny.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- originally thought Sarah married John Hopkins in 1873, and had a baby John Hopkins who died as an infant; both are incorrect as she had a son John Thomas Dark, and her marriage wasn’t until 1875.
On 1 Mar 1857 when Sarah Ann was 18, she first married John DARK, son of John DARK & Jane JENNINGS, in Newport Registry Office, Gwent, Wales. Born on 12 May 1837 in Padstow, Cornwall, England. Christened on 12 May 1837 in Padstow, Cornwall, England. John died in 20 Albion Street, Newport, Wales, on 8 Aug 1871; he was 34. Buried in 1871 in Churchyard St Woolas Newport? Cemetery. RESEARCH NOTES:

- 1891 family stories not all factual: On the eve of December 31st 1891 while bringing in the New Year Thomas is drunk and fall's over board and drowned. Thomas was a mariner, probably Merchant Navy, and ended his career as a Berthing Master/Harbourmaster in Newport, Mon. He apparently died after celebrating rather too heavily and falling overboard from a ship and drowning. Thomas drowned New Yrs Eve 1892[?]. He was intoxicated and fell over board at a party. Before his death he was a M. Mariner then  later a Berthing Master. Lived Newport Wales from a child. Research tends to suggest that Thomas actually died earlier than the advertised date.....given his death being registered in December 1891.  I suppose that New Years' Eve makes for a better anecdote... Death certificate not yet obtained.

- Another researcher obtained his death certificate: “The Certificate shows that Thomas died at the age of 50, at home at 7 Frederick Street on the 11th November 1891. This puts paid to the unfounded rumour that he fell off the back of a ship, tipsy, on New Years' Eve and drowned. His wife, Elizabeth's sister, Ann Clements (nee Gronow) was in attendance and registered the death. See also the newspaper cutting which reports a Thomas Andrews drowning in Newport Dock a couple of years earlier, which is obviously where the confusion arose.”
