Bessie trained as a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital, London, and became a fullly qualified State Registered Nurse. She went out to W. Australia in 1914 before the war started and was nursing for some time at a tuberculosis hospital in Woolaroo. From there she went to Canada to visit her sister Florence and she took a nursing post out there in Winnipeg. There she married George Handby, a sanitary inspector, as his second wife. She had no children of her own, but 2 step daughters. When George retired they removed to Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC, but after her husband died, Bessie decided to sell up her bungalow there and come to England. This was in 1936, and she took up private nursing again til the war was over, when she felt not strong enough to keep on any longer. She is now living in a home for edlerly people in Abbey Road, St. John's Wood, NW 8, where she seems very comfortable.
