- News clipping from family scrapbook (not cited):
"The Late John E Boorman
Capt. John E. Boorman
When Capt. John E. Boorman died on October 23d, Buffalo lost a man who had for many years done most efficient service as member of her Fire Department. Capt. Boorman was appointed a fireman in 1883 and was promoted to a lieutenancy a year later. He was later made captain of Engine NO. 17, but shortly afterward was transferred to Engine NO. 2. Later he was made captain of Truck NO. 9, but on account of continued ill health was finally superannuated. He was 42 years old at the time of his death. He was a member of the Firemen's Beneficiary Association, Parish Lodge, F. and A.M., New Era Lodge, I.O.O.F., and Court West Side, I.O.F."

- From a descendant:
“John Edward Boorman was born in Buffalo, New York on 25 October 1858. He married Ada Elizabeth Taylor in Buffalo on 9 July 1884. John and Ada had four children: Ada Mary, John Raymond, Erie Vann, and Taylor Daniel. John's obituary in The Buffalo Morning News contained the information in the paragraph immediately below:

He served for many years in the Buffalo, New York fire department. He was appointed a fireman in 1883 and was promoted to lieutenant a year later. He eventually made captain of Engine No. 17, then Engine No. 2 shortly thereafter, and finally Truck No. 9. He was superannuated (retired with a pension) sometime after that because of continued ill health.

John was a patient in the Buffalo State Hospital when the 1900 U.S. Federal Census was enumerated in the Buffalo, New York area on 18 June 1900. He died in the hospital on 23 October 1900, two days shy of his 42nd birthday. He and his wife Ada were respected members of the Buffalo community, having appeared in a Buffalo directory of socially prominent people.
John was buried in Section 13 (where Masonic Plot is located) of Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo. Section 13 is in the southwest corner of the cemetery. A beautiful Boorman headstone with his name and the name of his sister, Mary J. (Boorman) Carson, who died in 1894, marks their grave sites. There are Masonic symbols on the headstone above John's name. It is apparent that John was a Freemason. [Sources: websites findagrave.com and forest-lawn.com]”
