- 2006 from his obituary:
"He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 8, 1920. His father, Erie Sr., and mother, Mildred R. Kellar Boorman, were from New York State, where they married and moved to Utah shortly before Erie Jr. was born. Erie Jr. grew up in Springville, Utah, where he attended grade school, junior high and high school. At Springville High School, he was Mayor of the school (its Student Body President) and excelled on the basketball and track teams. His love for Springville and his school associates remained throughout his life.
He graduated cum laude in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of Colorado, where he also participated on the track team as a hurdler. He was then employed by United States Steel at its Geneva Steel Plant by Utah Lake as an accounting trainee.
In 1942 he enlisted in the Air Force and served as a navigator/bombardier in the South Pacific during World War II. Achieving a final rank of First Lieutenant, he received his Honorable Relief from Active Duty in 1946. Although he abhorred war and never bragged or told war stories, the family feels it is important to note that he received the following decorations and citations: Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation with 1 Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
In 1944 he married Birdie Delora Boyer, a beautiful girl born and raised in Provo, Utah. After the war ended he attended Stanford University Law School. There, he was the Note Editor for the Stanford Law Review, and helped produce its very first issue for publication. He graduated cum laude and then returned to Utah, where he was employed as the legal counsel for U.S. Steel in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.
In 1971 he joined the law firm of Parsons, Behle & Latimer in Salt Lake City, where he represented U.S. Steel, Kennecott and others in matters of mining, water and labor law; worker’s compensation and labor arbitration.
From 1985 until his retirement in 1999, he worked for the Utah Labor Commission, primarily with what was known as the Second Injury Fund. Contrary to some opinions, he found Utah state employees to be exceptionally well qualified, motivated, intelligent and friendly.
He can’t jump over the hurdles any more, but undoubtedly his memories of family and friends bring him great joy."
On 29 Jan 1944 when Erie Vann was 23, he married
Birdie Delora BOYER in Roswell Army Air Base, Roswell, Chaves, New Mexico, USA.
Born on 14 Mar 1921 in Provo, Utah, USA. Birdie Delora died in St George, Washington, Utah, USA, on 9 Nov 2010; she was 89. Buried on 15 Nov 2010 in Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah, USA.
- Daughter of Dell Delos Boyer (25 Jun 1879-4 Dec 1961) and Grace Guymon (16 Sep 1888 - 1 Aug 1933)
Sister of Louise (1912-1995), Margaret (1914-2006), Dell Roy (1916-1992), Guy Stanford (1924-1924) and Leah (1925-2013).
- 2010 from the obituary of Birdie Delora Boyer Boorman:
"She was born in Provo, Utah on March 14, 1921. Her father, Dr. Dell Delos Boyer, was a prominent Osteopath in Provo. Her mother, Grace Guymon Boyer, was a beautiful, caring woman who tragically passed away when Birdie was only 12 years old.
Birdie grew up in Provo, where she attended grade school, junior high and Provo High School. She graduated with honors from Brigham Young University in 1943, majoring in Drama and English Literature. In 1944, she married Erie Vann Boorman Jr., a very handsome and intelligent young man from Springville, Utah. Erie, a recent graduate from the University of Colorado, had already enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was undergoing training for World War II. She accompanied her husband to military bases in New Mexico and South Carolina before he left for the Pacific Theater in early 1945 as a navigator/bombardier. After the war, she and Erie moved to California while Erie attended Stanford Law School. She was grateful for these opportunities to meet fine people of different cultural backgrounds.
She and Erie moved back to Springville, and then Provo, where they lived in the same house on Locust Circle for more than 50 years. Birdie taught Public Speaking and Speech Communication & Interpretation for seven years at BYU, during which time she earned a Masters Fine Arts Degree in English Literature & Interpretation. She then taught English Literature and Composition for five years.
Through the years, she gave freely of her time in presenting plays, interpretive readings and book reviews, all over Utah County and further north. She and Erie started the Cub Scout program at Oak Hills Stake, with Erie as Cub Master and Birdie as a Den Mother. She was privileged to teach Primary, Mutual and Relief Society in Oak Hills Fourth Ward, activities which brought her great joy.
Upon retiring from her teaching and needing new horizons, she studied Art at BYU. In addition to classes from fine teachers there, she took workshops from noted national and local artists. She exhibited her artwork at BYU, the University of Utah, Dixie State College, Salt Lake Art Center, Kimball Art Center, and the Springville Museum of Art. Her appreciation for this incredibly beautiful world was heightened through her art experiences.
She expressed much gratitude for the gift of life, her husband, her family, and her friends; all of whom enriched her experiences and helped her meet life’s surprising challenges."
Birdie died in St. George, Utah on 9 November 2010. She was buried on 15 November 2010 in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah beside her late husband Erie, who died four years earlier.
